Stamford through to next round of Denny Plate

Stamford bowlers marched into the next round of the Denny Plate national inter-club competition with a comprehensive victory over north Lincolnshire club Louth.

They were holding an comfortable lead when Louth captain Simon Reeson conceded with still more than a dozen ends to play.

The competition demands two rinks at home while two rinks play away and Stamford quickly exerted pressure when news came through that Tristan Morton's away quartet had built a 19-3 advantage against veteran skip Alan Dent. On the adjoining rink, Simon Law, with Jeff Newson making his club debut for Stamford, trailed Colin Smith's four 8-12.

As the ends ticked over, captain Paul Bailey's rink at Stamford stretched their lead to 23-5 against Andy Leggett after 15 ends and when Morton's four announced a 23-9 lead three ends later, Louth threw in the towel.

Stamford will now meet Grantham - beaten in a close tussle with Sleaford - in the next round on Saturday, November 17.

Result (Stamford names only):

Denny Plate: Stamford 73 Louth 47. Home - D Hudson, J Holroyd, P Edwards, P Bailey won 23-5 (15 ends); W Aspinall, N Wright, A Warrington, J Earl lost 13-15 (15). Away- P Dalliday, B Warters, J Harford, T Morton won 23-9 (18); R Allam, Roger Martin, J Newson, S Law lost 14-18 (17).
