FOUR OF the five teams run by Bourne bowler David Howarth are challenging for titles in the Stamford Indoor Bowls Club's leagues, which sadly have had to be paused during the national lockdown which starts on Thursday.

The last sessions will be held on Wednesday night (November 4) when the club is due to close. It will not re-open until at least December 2, when the government are due to re-assess the national Covid-19 infection rate with a view to re-opening indoor sports stadiums like Stamford's in Exeter Gardens.

Howarth's teams, meanwhile - all of them in morning and afternoon competitions - will be itching to get back to complete their truncated fixtures as soon the green light is given.

His Outcasts (with Derek Cave, Bernie Crouch, Roger Martin, Tony Scarr, Bob Tooley and Ann and Malcolm Cullingworth) and Bourne Again teams, on Wednesdays and Friday afternoons respectively, are both unbeaten while his Brunnians and Wakes are challenging for the top on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings despite dropping a handful of points.

The only other teams in the nine leagues with a 100 per-cent record after seven matches are Northwicks (Bob and Carol Warters) who lead the Sunday morning mixed pairs league with 14 points from Ally McNaughton's Flyers.

Elsewhere youngster Owen Aspinall's Owen's Army will take a hotly-contested men's Friday evening triples league lead into December on shots difference from Neil Wright's Gun Law, after a six count against bottom of the table Poets on the penultimate end last week.

The leagues are due to be re-scheduled in January with a new fixture list. Any members who wish to register new teams should contact league secretary John Holroyd immediately. Club competitions are also due to commence in the New Year.

DIARY DATE: The proposed Women's Tuesday afternoon registration gathering has been provisionally re-arranged for Tuesday December 8 at 2pm.
