Richard Montgomery bowled the match-winner.

EIGHT Stamford senior bowlers have reached the last 32 of the national Over 60 Double Rink competition. But it took an extra end and a spectacular shot to beat their Leicester rivals.

With just a handful of ends to play Stamford 'A' held an overall lead of 17 shots, Martyn Dolby's rink leading by 16-6 at home and Roger Martin's quartet 15-8 in front at Leicester.

With telephone lines buzzing between the venues giving updated scores every few ends, both Stamford rinks thought they had the match under control - only to discover that at home they lost eight shots in three ends and away conceded a three, two singles

and a four - leaving the scores level at 31-31 after 18 ends at each venue.

As the rules decreed, the extra end was played at Stamford and with three shots against him after Dave Hudson and Mick Owens had bowled, it was left to Richard Montgomery to salvage the tie, which he did in some style - trailing the jack into the ditch for an unbeatable match-winner.

Stamford will now play either Melton surprise winners over Church Gresley) a place in the last 16.

Results (Stamford names only):

Over 60 Double rink: Stamford 31 Leicester 31 (Stamford won after extra end): Home - D Hudson, M Owens, R Montgomery, M Dolby won 16-14; away - Bob Warters, Mick Linnell, Alan Barnes, Roger Martin lost 15-17.
