Three Stamford IBC bowlers are just one step from reaching the last 16 of the English Indoor National Championship finals at Northampton in March after reaching the Inter-Area play-off for the prestigious Triples competition for Over 50s.

Alan Romaine, Peter Cox and Keith Rippin travelled to Horncastle at the weekend to take on Paul Bark's rink and after a shaky start when they dropped a five on the third end, fought back with runs of six shots from the fourth and 12th ends until the shocked home side, after dropping another three, finally conceded on the 16th end with the score at 20-8.The Stamford trio now face Ron Cowan's Nottingham-based rink at a neutral venue for a place in the national finals - the goal for every indoor bowler.Meanwhile Stamford IBC's Bob Warters and Martyn Dolby are hoping to reach a similar stage in the Over 60s pairs after a solid performance against Boston's Paul Flatters and Les Feary in the Area semi-final.Trailing 4-7 early on, they edged back into a slender lead with Feary consistently cutting a potential count with a decisive last bowl. However, the Stamford pair, who have reached the national final stages in the last three years, kept up the pressure with seven successive singles and when on the 19th at 15-11, Dolby had the chance to play a holding Boston bowl out of the head for a three count, he took it. They were due to play Scunthorpe's 2011 English Over 60s singles winner Phil Parker and his partner this week for a place in the Inter Area final.
