In the first part of a double-header against their local rivals, Stamford bowlers suffered a heavy defeat by Spalding in the women's national inter-club Yetton Trophy match.

On Saturday, Stamford men meet the star-studded indoor club in the second round of the equivalent tournament - the Denny Cup - having knocked out Melton last week.

In the women's event in which two rinks play at home and two away to record an aggregate score, Spalding strolled to a 43-shot victory (100-57) in a one-sided tussle.

Only Stamford captain Glenys Edwards, skipping the rink of Jan Want, Denise Mackie and Moira Holroyd, came close to salvaging some pride, but after leading Gill Needham's quartet at Spalding 16-12 after 15 ends conceded two on the 21st end to lose 17-18.

Neither Christine Ford nor Joan Robinson were able to hold experienced skips Margaret Dark or Gloria Haney at home.

Finally, spare a thought for the rink skipped by octogenarian Peggy Birch at Spalding, pitched against a team of national champions and internationals - Ruby Hill, Lucy Cooke, Chelsea Tomlin and Annalisa Dunham. The rink dropped an eight on the seventh end and a couple of other large counts in being given a lesson in drawing skills. But stuck to their task courageously before being finally conceding 37-9.

Stamford bowlers continue to show good form in national competitions, Ray Keating the latest to reach the Area quarter-finals of the Over 50 triples. The Irish-born skip joined with Dave Hudson and John Holroyd to beat the top Boston rink of Ron Flowers, Rod West and Adrian Field 19-17.

Faced with a count and the match against him on the last end, Keating fired with his last bowl and cleared out a bunch of Boston bowls to salvage the tie by the narrowest of margins.

In the regular triples Holroyd joined Richard Allam and Mick Humphreys to topple John Needham's Spalding trio 19-11. But no similar fortune for Keating with Wayne Aspinall and Chris Ballard who went down 5-18 to Graham Smith's Spalding trio.

Alan Romaine lost 21-16 to Scott Whyers (Boston) in the singles.

In the Over 60s pairs, Tony Barwell and Bruce Acock gave Boston's Paul Flatters and Les Feary a fright but ran out of steam at 17-23.

Martyn Dolby won his senior singles against Richard White 21-9 as did Derek King against club mate Mike Ramsden (21-11) and now plays Ray Keating.

Club singles winner Shirley Suffling has reached the area final of the national champion of champions with a 21-15 defeat of Jane Saunders (Long Sutton) and is due to meet Di Wilson -Rogers (Boston) for a place in the last 32 ahead of play-offs for the national finals Warners Lakeside in January.

Stamford bowlers played a key part in Lincolnshire Over 60's match against Nottinghamshire in the inter-county knock out where three rinks played at Nottingham and three at Boston.

Dave Hudson, Dougie Want, Bob Warters and Peter Edwards chalked up an outstanding 22-7 win at Nottingham as Lincs strolled to an overall 130-93 victory to earn a place in the quarter finals against Durham at York IBC on December 9.

Dennis Henshaw's newly promoted Stamford B men's team will be looking forward to a run of four home matches in the second division of the Lincs League after a disastrous start to their campaign which has seen them lose their opening three matches.

At Louth, against their A team, they never got to grips with the pedestrian pace of the carpet compared to the slick Stamford surface and were soundly beaten 59-148, conceding all 18 points.

Said Henshaw: "For whatever reasons were given, we weren't able to field our strongest team, but everyone tried their best and it was a useful experience to compete at a higher level. Hopefully a run of home games will see us escape from the foot of the table."
