STAMFORD Indoor Bowls Club hosts the second of its Open Mornings on Saturday (Sept 21) to introduce potential bowlers to the sport.

The free session will be held at the club's six rink arena off Exeter Gardens, where coaches and experienced bowlers will be on hand to encourage and offer advice to those considering bowls as a pastime, either competitively or for recreation and companionship.

Equipment is provided free at the session, which will run from 9.30am to noon.

Members are encouraged to bring along friends and family to try the sport.

More than a dozen new bowlers attended last week's first session, with several declaring it a real eye-opener.

Said one: "Until I read about it, I hadn't realised this superb facility was even here. It's not only a great sport but it encourages you to make new friends with a shared interest. I will definitely be back to have another go." BW

NORTHANTS PRESENTATIONS

Northants Bowling Federation stages its annual awards lunch on Sunday (Sept 22) at Orton Hall Hotel when national presidents Mick Rayson (Hunts) and Carole Swann (Norfolk) will present the trophies.

Among those being recognised will be the county's Derbyshire Trophy 'A' team - 11 of whom play their bowls at Stamford IBC - and who won the English Indoor county title for the first time since 2006.

The county also won the outdoor senior mixed pairs and men's three bowl rinks in the outdoor championships at Skegness in August.

Overseeing the awards ceremony will be county presidents Dick Noble (Whittlesey Manor) and Christine Ford (Ketton). BW
