Transition back to Indoors

Lincolnshire Success at Outdoor National Finals

Players from Stamford Indoor Bowls Club were involved in Bowls England's National Inter-County Team competition for the Middleton Cup on Sunday.

In fact Stamford players were on opposite sides in the semi Finals with Stephen Harris representing Lincolnshire whilst 13 year old Ollie Jeapes was accompanied by his father Michael represented Huntingdonshire together with Jonathan Earl, Paul Dalliday and Simon Law.

Whilst all of these players will be returning indoors within a fortnight they were at the peak of the outdoor season playing against each other at Leamington Spa in the semi finals. This was a close fought game which saw Lincolnshire triumph by 106 shots to 95 leaving our only representative in the final against last years winners, Berkshire, as Stephen Harris who plays his competitive indoor bowls out of Spalding as does Ollie Jeapes from Hunts who turns 14 in just over a month.

The final started off with Berkshire taking an early lead but Lincolnshire quickly got back on terms and from the mid way point they started to build a steady lead that Berkshire were unable to make any inroads into. Lincolnshire were therefore the winners by 115 shot to 98 leaving Stamfordian Stephen with his first outdoor team title.

Lincolnshire ladies, pictured above with the Middleton Cup team, also took a team title on the same day, winning the prestigious Walker Cup.

Federation National Finals Action at Skegness

A number of Stamford indoor players took part in the finals last week with the best performance coming from Ollie Jeapes who lost in the semi finals of the Under 25 Singles to eventual winner, Sam Brugnoli from Huntingdon.

Going one stage further Katie Bailey & Jonathan Earl contested the Mixed PAirs but were unable to emulate their form in the earlier rounds losing out the a strong Lincolnshire pair by 8 shots to 22.

Indoor Summer Season nears a conclusion

With only a fortnight to go to the start of the Indoor League season the Final of the Summer Pairs was played on Saturday. With incapacitated Dave Edwards out of action Chris Ballard turned to seasoned campaigner John Little to partner him against husband and wife team Brian and Linda Allen. The first five ends were closely fought before Chris Ballard found a rich vein of form at lead to put the trophy out of reach for the Allens.

We recently held a very successful day of bowling at all sorts of targets followed by two hours of proper bowling. The day was organised by the clubs social committee and proved to be a great day enjoyed by 36 bowlers and spectators. In the morning you bowled at flat targets, tin cans, through hoops at a jack. These targets were not that easy as you normally bowl at jacks and other woods that may also be on the green. During the day there was a break for lunch with amazing jacket potatoes with various fillings, all provided by Woody’s Catering our in house team. The whole day ended with Strawberries and Fizz followed by the prize giving to the winning Team

You can call in to our bowls club for all sorts of refreshments from the newly form pair of Woody’s catering. Tom and Emma will tempt you with a variety of home cooked food from just a slice of toast, a full English breakfast and soon to be Sunday Lunches available from October. Why not ordered your meal or sandwiches before you bowl your order will then be ready when finished bowling.

The summer Leagues are fast approaching their conclusion with only one game left to play in the Monday Evening Triple and the Tuesday 'Noon' Pairs.

In the Monday evening league, Derek Cave's 'Golf' lead by two points over Ron Blake's 'Whisky'. Whilst 'Whisky have the better shots difference 'Golf play a side bottom of the table whereas 'Whisky' must  win against a mid table side and hope for an unlikely slip up from the league leaders.

In the Tuesday Pairs league Bernie Crouch's 'Carnations' side are the undisputed champions as no one can catch them. Next weeks games sees the battle for second place between Paul Green's 'Roses' and Janet Green's 'Orchids' who are just one point behind them. However, 'Orchids' face the tougher test as they are up against the champions.

Bernie Crouch is again in the lead in the Wednesday morning triples league with his team 'The Wakes'. He has a slender lead of 9 shots over Lyn Tuck's 'Solar Eclipse and 2 points over third placed 'Ullswater' captained by Sandie Wilkin. So it's is all to play for with two games remaining with the grudge match being this weeks game between 'The Wakes' and 'Ullswater'.  However, 'Ullswater's' inferior shots difference would probably mean that even if they win this match it would only give some advantage to 'Solar Eclipse'.

Thursday Evening Triples league is being contested by teams made of players who have not played indoors for more than three seasons. With two games left to play it looks as if Stu Taylor's 'Galaxy' team will be champions as second placed team 'The Carpenters' captained by Sue Clinkard only have one game left to play and being 3 points behind cannot catch them. Theoretically they could be caught by third placed 'Magays' captained by Marissa Hirst who are two points behind with two to play but Galaxy's superior shots difference maked this a little unrealistic. However, 'Margays' play 'Galaxy' this week and will want to make their mark if only to gain points to secure the runners up position.
