Stamford's senior women bowlers continue on their glory trail - reaching the fourth round of the prestigious Masons Trophy today (Friday) with an emphatic defeat of Long Sutton.

The overall score of 37-29 - an aggregate score from one rink of four at home and one away - reflects the teamwork the women engender, making the most of home advantage while keeping it tight on the unfamiliar opposition surface.

At Stamford, the rink skipped by team captain Glenys Edwards gave very little away, building up a 14-3 lead before dropping five shots in three ends as Chris Ford's away rink struggled with the vagaries of the Long Sutton surface but made sure they kept in touch with their contribution to the overall score.

A five count from Edwards' rink on the 15th end followed by six more shots over the remaining three ends for a 25-8 win, finally put the overall result doubt as news came through that Ford had restricted their rivals to a 12-21 scoreline.

Stamford now play either Barwell or Leicester B in the round of the last 32 on Friday, February 17.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the Stamford women take a coach load of supporters to New Earswick (York) to play West Denton (Newcastle) in the quarter-final of the national inter-club Yetton Plate.

The competition demands four rinks of four playing 18 ends with the overall winners facing either Whiteknights (Reading) or Isca (Exeter) again on neutral territory.
