After more than a year without competitive inter-club bowls, the Stamford Indoor Club restarts its Men's Lincolnshire League Division One programme with the visit of Boston B on Saturday, (1.10pm).

The pandemic has meant that for one season only the county will be divided into north and south sections in which Stamford's A and B teams of 16 players each, will contest matches against two teams from Boston and one each from Grantham, Spalding and Sleaford.

Stamford B, captained by Pete Linnell, will visit Boston A on Saturday with a team yet to be finalised.

Stamford A: Mike Ramsden, Mick Linnell, Tony Scarr, Roger Martin; Mick Humphreys, Dusty Miller, Jon Earl, Martyn Dolby; Mal Smith, Jay Travis-Jenner, Neil Wright, Adam Warrington; Richard Allam, Owen Aspinall, Chris Ballard, Bob Warters (Capt).

CLUB NEWS

CLUB COMPETITIONS

Stamford IBC has opened its club competitions entry format in which full members can take part in a raft of events which will culminate in the finals weekend on April 9/10, 2022.

As well as singles, pairs, triples and fours for men and women, there are three mixed competitions and an Open singles for seniors aged 65 and over. A novice triples is also available to those who have never won a club competition and were not a member prior to 2017. Entry fee is £1 per player per competition, closing date is October 30.

INDOOR BOWLS MEMBERSHIP BOOST

Despite the challenges of Covid which closed the building for several months, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club has bounced back with more than 80 per-cent of its pre-pandemic numbers holding full playing rights.

More than 400 have re-joined or taken up membership for the first time, the club has revealed in its latest figures. However, more than 70 have yet to re-join - third of whom still have a locker, most of which contain bowls and need to be cleared if they are not to be used.

A list of these players is available in the club and members who know them should contact them soon as possible to clarify their status.

Says chairman Keith Rippin: "It has been a difficult time for nearly two years and predictably we have lost membership, illustrated by a list of those who have resigned or who have not yet joined. Some still have a locker and a good proportion of these still have their bowls in them

"The good news is that we now have 415 paid up full members plus three juniors - somewhat short of what we had two season ago but still represents a large percentage and includes 41 new members - a testament to a successful recruitment campaign."

STUTTERING START FOR OVER 60s

David Heffernan's Stamford Over 60s team suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Boston B in the first county seniors league fixture of the season, claiming only four of the 14 points at stake.

They lost overall by 25 shots, though the team shared the new four rink format and will entertain Grantham on October 13 and Sleaford on November 3 in the hope of salvaging some pride as well as points.

With Dennis Henshaw having suffered a fall just hours before the match, the captain was unable to find a substitute in time, which left one rink of three - Bernie Crouch, making and impressive debut, Mick Linnell and Bob Warters - facing a two bowl handicap against a Boston rink of four players.

However, with a disciplined performance on an unfamiliar slick surface, they ran out 22-20 winners, thanks to a vital four count on the penultimate end.

Elsewhere Trevor Christie's rink, after trailing throughout, also picked up four shots on the last end to win by one.
