Mixed triples winners from the left: Wayne Morris, Pam Barton and Chris Ballard.

Wayne Morris a 35-year-old pensions analyst, cashed in at the Stamford Indoor Bowls Club's finals weekend, claiming three titles.

In only his sixth season, Morris has been one of the game's most improved players and underlined his natural talent by earning a place in the English champion of champions with a 21-12 defeat of the club's defending champion Martyn Dolby. Often he out-drew his opponent with precision bowls that showed a deft touch that belied his relative inexperience.

Earlier he had paired up with Martin Bailey to win the men's pairs by defeating Alan Barnes and Peter Banks 25-17 then skipped relative newcomers to the sport, Pam Barton and Chris Ballard, to a comfortable win in the mixed triples.

Among the double winners were June Brennan and Ladies President Anita Edwards who followed a slender 20-19 win in the pairs by combining with Rose March and Shirley Suffling to take the women's rinks 28-11 against Anna Martin, Chris Baker, Margaret Bloxham and Pearl O'Brien.

Former national champion Malcolm Cullingworth and his wife Ann also picked up two titles - the mixed pairs with a narrow 22-20 defeat of John and Moira Holroyd, then the mixed rinks with Jan Want and Alan Barnes.

Peter Edwards is rarely out of contention competitively and this year was no exception. He and his wife Glenys work tirelessly behind the scenes and competition organisers and his triples and fours success was due reward for the effort the couple put in to the highlight of the club's season.

Commented one observer: "It was great to see some new players coming through to compete in the finals. All matches provided excellent entertainment for spectators and showed that the club is going from strength to strength and attracting new talent to the sport."
