WORK HAS begun replacing Stamford Indoor Bowls Club's playing surface in readiness for when the sport is given the green light to start again. It is expected to be completed this week.

The current coronavirus pandemic led to the club's closure on March 14, preventing its 500-strong membership completing its club and county fixtures.

It remains closed until government restrictions are lifted to enable indoor sport participants to resume play without the need for social distancing. The summer bowling schedule has already been cancelled and a question mark still hangs over the start of the next winter season in September.

At the end of last year the membership was offered the opportunity to choose either blue or traditional green to replace the carpet that had been used for nearly 20 years and was starting to show signs of wear.

The members chose green by a narrow majority and the underlay and carpet was paid for with more than £30,000 which had been set aside.

More than 50 pieces of underlay and 16 three-metre wide lengths of carpet were needed for the re-surfacing by Dales of Boston.

The underlay with the new carpet is reputed to be of a texture that will enable the green to quickly re-establish its pace with regular stretching. BW
