SCORING GOES DIGITAL

From the start of the winter season at Stamford Indoor Bowls Club, domestic league team captains or their representatives will need to post their scores digitally from their scorecards on to i-pads provided by the club - immediately after completing a match.

A similar system to 'BOWLR' has been adopted for several years at thousands of golf clubs around the world, to register scores and adjust handicaps. Converting the scores will help provide an immediate update of results and league standings for bowlers, together with identifying if a player is legally registered to a team.

Players must have completed their membership form and paid their subscription before they compete in a league match. Failure to do so could result in points deducted. Team captains, who should have all received their fixtures, must also ensure the team's £5 registration has been paid.

Domestic league matches are pre-booked on the system before the season starts. Members can also book spare rinks online for national, county or club competitions or just for roll-ups by submitting their name and membership number.

League secretary John Holroyd says: "With all scores to be entered onto iPads after matches, a membership numbers will be needed. A list of them for each member will be available in the club for reference."

He adds: "All captains had a valid email address available to me but some are not up to date on the system so can all captains check and update their profile please."

The club's Thursday afternoon men's triples league will be starting again in September but due to lack of registered teams can continue only until December. However, if more teams can be found it will re-start in January.

The club is also looking for those prepared to do reception duty during the season where training is provided. Contact Margaret King 01780 765843.

The playing surface carpet was stretched this week and returned to six-rink capacity (from five rinks since October 2020 to accommodate social distancing). 'T' marks are returned to their original place, central and two metres from the ditch together with re-spots.

FOOTNOTE: The club is hosting a free recruitment weekend from 10am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday (September 4 & 5) in a bid to enlist potential members to try bowls. Equipment is provided free and coaches and experienced bowlers will be on hand to encourage new bowlers to have a go.
