By taking a maximum 18 points from top of the table Spalding, Stamford's mixed team have taken a slender four point lead at the head of the Lincs Mixed League Division One - a title they have never won in their 27-year history.

With 81 points from six matches Stamford have four matches remaining - two at home and two away - the next at home to Lincoln A next week.

Stamford ran rampant against a weakened Spalding eventually winning by 71 shots and without conceding a rink point although Margaret Andrews, Dick and Chris Ford and Mal Smith left it late - snaffling two shots on the last end to win 21-19.

Elsewhere Dave Hudson, Christine Barnes Shirley Suffling and Martyn Dolby took the rink honours beating Graham Wright's four 39-11.

Result (Stamford names only):

Lincs Mixed League Division One: Stamford 138 (18 pts) Spalding A 67 (0). Congratulations to Stamford B, whom without bowling a bowl, have clinched the third division title in the Lincs Men's League.

Louth B lost at home to Long Sutton B 78-100 (conceding 15 points) which put the championship beyond doubt in Stamford's favour.

Roger Graham's team, have won all their five matches, amassing 80 points and face a visit to Louth for their last match on Saturday (Feb 18) with the trophy already in their possession, appreciating that next season they will face far tougher opposition in the second division.

Ipswich bowler Phil Last won the £700 first prize at the Boston Open singles, beating Andy Ware (City of Ely) in the final.

He also beat Stamford's Mike Ramsden on the way to the title. Also taking part were Chris Ballard, beaten in a first round tie break by Tony Seaborne while Stephen Harris beat Dave Allen in his first round match before losing to eventual semi-finalist Ian Clark (Boston) in another tie break.
