Huntingdon Hooray

AT LAST our weekend friendly team have something to write home about. A 122-93 win at home against Huntingdon who couldn't include Nick Brett in their line-up. We understand the excuse was that it was his turn to walk the dog! Anyway here's how we achieved our well overdue win.

Our best rink skipped by Doug Ellis saw them lead from start to finish and win by a creditable margin of twenty shots which helped erase the memory of a humiliating defeat that Doug had at Spalding the week before. Hot on Doug's heels was our latest sensational discovery Helen Holroyd who believes that the best method of defence is to attack at every opportunity. Her rink also led from start to finish to run out 25-13 winners. Our next rink, in pecking order, was that skipped by Tony Andrews, who in spite of a bit of a 'wobble' halfway through finished 27-18 winners. The comeback of the day was Phil Hoare's rink who were behind up until the sixteenth end but scored six on the last three to win by 19-14. Sadly we did have two losing rinks, that of Margaret Andrews who played on six and in spite of being all square after thirteen never recovered from dropping a seven on the fourteenth and lost by three. Finally Gerry Knights had an unusual disaster where he was 'fighting fires' after the third. Keep taking the tablets Garry.

Rink scores (Stamford names only ) Vanessa Shackleton, Ian Hall, Doug Ellis won 26-6; Rosemary Roberts, Howard Neath, Helen Holroyd won 25-13; Denis Stapleton, Maggie Holden, Tony Andrews won 27-18; Vivian Anthony, Margaret Grainger, Phil Hoare won 19-14; Betty Sims, Bob Hulka, Margaret Andrews lost 18-21; Tina Knights, Stephie Smye, Garry Knights lost 7-21.

Of course there were hiccups, it wouldn't be the same if there weren't . Throughout the week there were phone calls, "perhaps I might, perhaps I might not", perhaps I can, perhaps I can't" right up until the Saturday morning. So well done everyone who played including those who stood in at the last minute. The other hiccup was that we started fifteen minutes late due to the opposition who, in spite of computers, laptops, i-pads etc couldn't get the books to balance. Bring back the 'Abacus' every good bowls club should have one !

Next match Desborough away on Saturday Feb 25. Team sheet on notice board.. Denis Stapleton
