Plate disappointment for Stamford women

A LATE surge of scoring by their Derbyshire rivals cost Stamford a place in the next round of the Yetton Plate, the women's inter-club championship for first round losers in the Yetton Trophy.

Stamford reached the quarter-finals last year but with a re-shuffled side against Church Gresley, they could not recapture that form, despite the scores being tied at 67 apiece with just three ends to play.

Away from home the rinks skipped by Glenys Edwards and Margaret Bloxham were out of sorts for much of the 21-end match, never came to terms with the home carpet and conceded a total of eight shots in the last three ends.

At Stamford, meanwhile, the rinks skipped by Rose March and Christine Ford had kept Stamford in the match as scores were exchanged by telephone on completion of every five ends. But while Ford's quartet were able to extend their 30-14 lead to 17 shots, their colleagues had to settle for a draw, giving Church Gresley the match 84-76.

Result (Stamford names only):

Yetton Plate : Stamford 76 Church Gresley 84. Home - J Want, D Mackie, S Suffling, C Ford won 38-19; J Brennan, L Harris, P Birch, R March drew 18-18; away - C Barnes, H Holroyd, C Warters, M Bloxham lost 7-25; E Wallace, M Andrews, M Holroyd, G Edwards lost 13-22.

Stamford's seniors women's team will play old rivals Spalding for a place in the next round of the Masons Trophy on January 19 after defeating Grantham 52-19.

Much of the credit for the latest win was down to the home team of June Brennan, Jan Want, Shirley Suffling and Christine Ford who showed no mercy for an inexperienced Grantham rink, scoring 38 shots without reply before conceding one on the final end.

Result ( Stamford names only):

Home - J Brennan, J Want, S Suffling, C Ford won 38-1; away - E Wallace, M Andrews, D Mackie, G Edwards lost 14-18.
