Denny disaster! But opportunity knocks v Sleaford

Comprehensively and unceremoniously dumped out of the national inter-club Denny Cup by Grantham 94-49 on Saturday, Stamford now face a challenge against local rivals Sleaford in the Denny Plate for first round losers in the competition. The prize for victory on Saturday(10am) is a trip to Melton IBC, headquarters of the English Indoor Bowling Association.

In the two home legs against Grantham, Stamford were always on the back foot after Roger Martin's rink slipped quickly behind and at one stage conceded 31 shots without reply. The skip had to kill five ends before finally his quartet battled back to a slightly more respectable 10-33 scoreline.

Alongside, Keith Rippin was always chasing the game while away from home Peter Edwards rink couldn't come to terms with the accurate drawing of England triallist Matt Orrey. The only bright spot was the defeat of former international Dion Auckland's rink by Martyn Dolby's four 19-15.

In a simultaneous double-header, Stamford's women's team also play Sleaford at home and away on Saturday (10am) in the Yetton Inter-Club Plate.

Better news for the club came with the second successive home win for the Men's B team in the Third Division of the Lincs League - a 111-75 defeat of Boston B, to claim another 16 points.

Aided by David Howarth, Nyran Graham and Mick Owens, Richard Martin led the rout with a 34-10 win, while skips Peter Banks, Albert Horton and Martin Hewitt earned comfortable wins to keep Stamford's promotion chase on course.

In the Women's Over 60s Mason Trophy double rink, Stamford suffered both home and away to former champions Spalding trailing by 30 shots in a 53-23 defeat.

In the Lincs Mixed League Spalding also came out on top again in Division One, taking all 18 points, despite Stamford taking the early initiative.

But finally they were steamrollered by superior drawing skills in the later stages although Chris Barnes, Denise Mackie, Derek King and Alan Barnes held a slender single point lead against former Stamford bowler Brian Benton before they dropped two shots on the last end.

Stamford mixed team entertain Scunthorpe on Sunday (2.10pm) hoping to regain some much-needed confidence.

Stamford bowlers Alan Romaine, Mike Ramsden, Peter Cox and Bob Warters were part of the Lincs Over 60 team beaten by Yorkshire at New Earswick in the Midland Counties League. Their rink went down 19-15.

Glenys Edwards and Christine Ford scored a memorable 27-16 victory over former International Gloria Haney (Spalding) in the national Over 60s pairs.
