Directors' green light to colour of new bowls surface

IT HAS been one of the main talking points at Stamford Indoor Bowls Club for several months - ever since the directors decided to commit to a new £35,000 playing surface carpet and give the members the opportunity to choose the colour - green or blue.

There would be no difference in the cost, merely that the choice needed to be made in January - early enough for work to start on laying the new underlay and surface in April.

A vote among members was taken in the September newsletter by way of giving the directors guidance for their considerations on colour in which 232 pledged their preference - roughly 46% of the membership.

Determined to ensure their decision was a democratic one, the directors heard that 129 voted to retain a green carpet while 103 voted for blue, a difference of ten per-cent - 56% compared to 44%.

So Stamford will retain its traditional green surface - thanks to a ballot by the membership which the directors have taken fully on board.

FOOTNOTE: Lincoln & District Indoor Bowls Club has recently installed a blue carpet at its eight rink facility but their needs were chiefly governed by their television commitments which demanded a blue colour. BW

SENIORS REACH LAST 16

Stamford will be represented in the last 16 of the National EIBA Over 60s Double Rink following a comprehensive 22-shot defeat of local rivals Melton.

They will play Louth for a place in the quarter-finals - one rink at home, one rink away - following the North Lincolnshire club's defeat of Alfreton.

With Tony Scarr drafted in at No.3 to support Dave Hudson, Mick Owens and Martyn Dolby, the Stamford home side picked up seven shots on the eighth end to throw down the gauntlet to the visitors with a 17-2 lead, which they converted to 28-4 by completion of the 15th of 18 ends.

Meanwhile at Melton, Roger Martin's rink of Bob Warters, Mick Linnell and Alan Barnes were having a close tussle with 'Chalky' White's quartet and trailed 14-17 until a four and three count on successive ends put the overall score beyond reach.

Results (Stamford names only):

EIBA Over 60 double Rink: Stamford A 52 Melton 30. Home - D Hudson, M Owens, T Scarr, M Dolby won 31-12; Away - B Warters, M Linnell, A Barnes, R Martin won 21-18.
