Needing two shots to force an extra end in their Yetton Plate match with Sleaford, Stamford’s women bowlers had to settle for second best by the narrowest of margins.
With all other rinks finished - in a contest which demands two rinks from each club playing at home and away simultaneously with overall shots to count - Denise Mackie couldn’t grab the extra shot needed to force a one end tie-break to be played at Sleaford.
After 18 of the 21 ends, Stamford held a slender four shot lead, but as crucial shots were exchanged at both venues as the winning line approached, they were left frustrated.
Sleaford will play Gedling (Nottingham) in the area final on January 3.

Any hopes that Stamford Seniors might have of capturing the county title after reaching last year’s final suffered a setback at Lincoln.
Further misery came with a hold up of several hours as players negotiated traffic jams on their way home in appalling weather conditions.
Already hampered by withdrawals, captain Kevin Vinter had to call on the services of Tony Barwell, still recovering from a back injury, at the last minute to complete a team which was eventually overwhelmed by Lincoln and their ultra-fast carpet surface.
John Holroyd’s rink of Graham Patrickson, Paul Shaw and Neil Crees put up stubborn resistance against Steve Darcy’s home four but were eventually beaten by five shots as Lincoln took maximum points.

Stamford seniors’ run in the national Over 60s Double Rink finally hit the buffers when they were beaten 38-27 by local rivals Grantham.
Following defeats of Boston and Sleaford - one Stamford rink playing at home and away simultaneously - Stamford started well when the home rink of Dave Hudson, Graham Patrickson, Bob Warters and Kevin Vinter surged into a 12-2 lead. It was short-lived however, cancelled out at Grantham by Martin Pulling’s experienced rink by the 10th of 18 scheduled ends.
While Vinter’s four lost the initiative with two four-counts against them, they fought back from a 12-15 deficit to win 18-17 . But it was never enough to overcome Grantham’s home domination.
