Draw for Christmas 2021 Tournament Revealed

Subject to government restrictions due to be announced later this week, Stamford indoor Bowls Club's Christmas Tournament is set to go ahead on Tuesday, December 28.

Eighteen teams of four players have been accepted by last Friday's closing date, though all have been warned that the event may be cancelled if it is decided that regulations put in place beforehand prevent gatherings at indoor sporting venues.

With £300 in prize money at stake and already a similar amount received in entry fees, the organisers are reluctant to call a halt prematurely but are aware that Covid restrictions likely to be issued by the government and in conjunction with the game's governing body, may leave them with no choice.

However, strict protocols will be in place with masks worn while moving around the club, except when eating and drinking or voluntarily when competing on the green. With changing facilities limited, entrants are also being asked to minimise the equipment they bring into the club to two bowls and a change into bowls shoes to avoid bags causing a safety hazard in confined spaces.

Each team will play four matches of seven ends, scoring two points for a win and one for a draw.

Start times for the first of four sessions are as follows:
9.30 am: Derek Cave's team v Martin Wallace; John Earl v Kevin Vinter; Dave Edwards v Jill Goode; Henry Gordon v Pete Linnell; Bob Scholes v Ally McNaughton;
10.30am: Ian Reay v Sylvia Scotney; Roger Clarke v Rose March; Abbs Belding v Chris Ballard; Annette Oliver v Chris Ford.

COUNTY QUALIFIERS

Richard Allam will feature in four events when the Lincolnshire Indoor Bowls Association competitions resume in the new year.

As well as the pairs with Bob Warters - opposition for which has yet to be declared - he has qualified for three singles events - the men's, Open sets and Open Over 60s.

In the men's singles Allam joins clubmate Tony Barwell at Boston on February 13 who will play Jason Lewis (Grantham). Also from Stamford in the sets at Louth on March 13 are John Pearson, Shirley Suffling and Christine Ford who faces Spalding's Dominic McVittie.

Alongside Allam and Ron Blake, Martyn Dolby claimed the last seniors qualifying place at Grantham on February 26 thanks to a 21-8 defeat of Warters and will play Dave Warren (Louth) in the last 16.

Yet to know their next opponents are Stamford's representatives in the triples (Paul Green, Blake and Tony Diovisalvi) and fours (Chris Ballard, Owen Aspinall, Neil Wright and Adam Warrington). Matches should be played by February 13.

THAT WAS CLOSE!

With just four ends to play in their Lincs League South match away to fourth-placed Boston B, Stamford Men's B team trailed by 24 shots which threatened to spoil any hopes of a pre-Christmas celebration.

Then suddenly the rink of Alan Romaine - making a welcome return to competitive bowls - Mick Smith, Dave Heffernan and Ally McNaughton picked up seven shots on one end and added two more on the next to transform 12-16 deficit into a 21-17 victory.

It seemed to lift the rest of the team and skips Darren Middleton, Maurice Dye and Martin Hewitt all picked up further shots without quite claiming more points in a narrow overall five shot defeat.

Stamford A and B teams are both due to be back in action on January 15 away to Boston B and Grantham respectively. The men's Over 60s entertain Boston B on January 5 (10 am).

Result: Lincs Men's League (South): Boston B 73 (12 pts) Stamford B 68 (2). Stamford names only: P Linnell, M Wallace, R Blake, D Middleton lost 13-19; A Romaine, Mick Smith, D Heffernan, A McNaughton won 21-17; K Rawlins, H Gordon, N Crees, M Dye lost 16-18; T Barwell, R Graham, D Edwards, M Hewitt lost 18-19.

Stamford IBA is closed for domestic leagues and roll-ups from December 24 and will re-open on January 3.

NORTHANTS COMPETITIONS

Northants Bowling Federation's indoor singles competitions, most of which are played at Stamford IBC, have thrown up some fascinating draws for the early rounds to be played early in the New Year, subject to any government Covid restrictions or those imposed by the game's governing body.

Stephen Harris will play Chris Ballard in the men's singles for the chance to play another former winner Martyn Dolby, while Michael Jeapes and his son Ollie take on Jon Earl and Alec Emery respectively.

In the senior singles Kevin Vinter awaits the tie between Derek King, recovering from injury, and Martyn Dolby.

Stamford-based bowlers also dominate the women's competitions, where Chris Ford faces Louise Harris in an intriguing singles and meets defending champion Joan Robinson in the senior version.
