Denny Plate for Stamford after defeat by Boston

Despite picking up 12 shots at Boston in the last four ends, Stamford crashed out at the first round stage of the 18-end Denny Cup, the prestigious English inter-club championship.

The overall 71-78 defeat over four rinks - two at home and two away - puts them in the consolation Denny Plate with the rest of England's 200-plus first round losers - a competition in which they reached the last eight two years ago.

Against Boston, Stamford got off to a shocking start and overall trailed 3-17 after only five ends, with Roger Martin's away rink dropping counts of 5, 3 and 4 in three ends. But they immediately pulled back two counts of four and were level by the 14th end, eventually running out 22-20 winners.

On the adjoining rink Paul Bailey's quartet picked up three shots on the 15th end to close the overall gap to just two shots (62-64) but finally succumbed 20-21.

Sadly, at Stamford the home rinks were not having it all their own way and as the match reached its climax Peter Edwards' rink dropped three shots to lose 12-20 to Scott Whyers and Martyn Dolby's four conceded counts of 1, 4 and 2 against Old foe Les Feary, having previously dominated their match. They were able only to hang for a share of 34 shots.

In the plate, Stamford will play Sleaford who lost to Long Sutton 52-78. Melton await the winners.
