Huntingdon hunted down in the friendly.

Stamford's weekend friendly team are on a roll after a win away at Huntingdon. It was a good start before a wood was bowled, well for us anyway. One of their team was going to be ten minutes late, so we’ll start without them, and another wasn’t going to make it because they were on holiday in Cyprus. It doesn’t just happen to us then. So off we go.

On rink one Jenny Desborough rolled the jack, turned round to pick up one of her woods and found they weren’t there. She had her hearing aid turned off when the rink announcements were made and had put them on rink four. Anyway she proved that an ability to hear isn’t a vital asset when playing bowls, as many skips regularly indicate, or not as the case may be. Jenny put her first wood within a foot and continued to pepper the jack throughout the match, much to the delight of her skip. Of course you were Howard. As well as his trio getting the best rink prize two weeks running,

Smarties are now Ron Blake’s favourite sweets; he also gets top marks for spotting that the jack couldn’t be re-spotted because there were no re-spotting marks. On rink six we were honoured with the presence of our President Arthur (Paso Doble) Lonslow who danced his second wood into second place but put his third in the dyke and lost the end. After the first end we are 4-2 down. Don’t start panicking just yet.

On rink five Margaret Grainger can’t find her piece of chalk that she’s had with her since she left school. She tips the whole of the contents of her handbag onto the floor and it’s still not to be found. She bursts into tears, to be consoled only by a treble gin bought for her by her opposite number, that’ll go on expenses. Reg Goode on rink four moans that he is only getting thirty three and a third percent. Of what; thinks Serena? On the fourth end Nigel Trigg’s rink drops a seven (ouch!) and goes 11-1 down. We are 20-14 down overall.

On rink two although we are two down, Cherry Burgess puts in a blocker. This we are told is to fool the opposition. Howard, on rink one, continues to smile at Jenny as she get another toucher. On rink three Adrian Childs is keeping the score down to three nil. Overall, after five ends we trail 20-28 but after a cup of tea, a trip to the ablutions and a breath of fresh air we have remarkably shot into a 50-36 lead. This is mainly due to Jill Goode’s rink of husband Reg, who’s now talking about being in a fantasy world, and Serena who according to Reg is red hot. They lead 12-3.

So we are into the second half and everyone has taken their second dose of tablets. Margaret is still trying to find her piece of chalk and Arthur has changed his steps to what appears to be the dashing white sergeant. Our captain Maggie is heard to shout ‘I’ve done it again’ done what we are not quite sure, but never mind we are nineteen up with three ends to go. We surely can’ lose now. Not to prolong the agony we hung on and won 97-83. Oh yes we did. Well done everybody. Long may it continue?

Rink scores: Jenny Desborough, Colin Burgess, Howard Neath won 19-11; Ann Preston Bambridge, Cherry Burgess, Nigel Trigg lost 8-18; Judith Childs, Alison Lea, Adrian Childs lost 12-17; Reg Goode, Serena Brunning, Jill Goode won 19-13; Rosemary Roberts, Margaret Grainger, Ron Blake won 22-10; Janet Lonslow, Maggie Holden, Arthur Lonslow won 17-14.
