BY CLAIMING maximum points from local rivals Grantham, Stamford's mixed team vastly improved their chances of regaining their place back in the first division of the county league following last year's relegation. It still leaves them in third position in Division Two but only eight points behind second placed Skegness with a game in hand. Scunthorpe head the table on 90 points, 13 points in front. Both clubs have yet to come to Stamford.Rink one again proved to be the most difficult to overcome for the opposition, with this time June Brennan, Denise Mackie, Mike Ramsden and John Little (pictured left) in complete command, winning 29-8 to claim the rink honours.Elsewhere, 13 shots in five ends put Paul Bailey's rink beyond reach while ten in four successive ends turned the tables for Sue Moir's quartet. Cliff Watson got off to a 13-1 flyer and never capitulated while Martyn Dolby's four always looked in control despite the 17-14 scoreline. Result (Stamford names only):Lincs Mixed County League, Division Two. Stamford 116 (18 pts) Grantham 57 (0). Their hopes of reaching the inter-area final of the Over 60s pairs, ended at Louth for Bob Warters and Roger Martyn, bamboozled by the home surface, slower and trickier than their own.

Against Jeff McCue and Allan Dent Snr they got off to the worst of starts while trying to come to terms with the carpet. They conceded a five count on the first end and were 10-0 behind before recording their first shots. Searching for a length to suit them they reduced the deficit to 9-14 before conceding another five on the 11th end.

Despite holding shots in the closing stages they were unable to manacle Dent's heavy shots and finally conceded the match on the 18th when trailing 10-23.

For Martyn Dolby his aim of reaching a similar stage ended at Lincoln at the hands of George Draper in the Over 60s singles.

Dolby worked hard to lead 8-3 and 11-6 on the unfamiliar surface but gradually Draper wore him down with relentless drawing and ran out a 21-14 winner.
