As part of their 25th anniversary celebrations, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club hosted a team representing officials of the game's governing body, the English Indoor Bowling Association.

The Past Presidents Touring side included Maurice Mayes, a board director responsible for internationals and several other former past presidents of the EIBA who were all impressed by the club's facilities and its welcome.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to join your celebrations and to hear and see what you have achieved in your 25 years, " he said. "We congratulate you and want you to know that we at the EIBA are here to serve you. As a club you are not there to serve us. If there is anything we can do to help the club in the future we will do our very best."

Club President Bob Warters earlier revealed that the club was originally formed in 1990 against a background of protests from local residents. But the South Kesteven District Council took the appeal against planning permission right up to the High Court in London and won.

"We are proud that the club is now thriving and bucking the national trend with its recent growth in numbers. We achieve this as a club totally run by volunteers and the team invited to play the EIBA reflects that as a cross section of helpers, including directors, management and entertainments committee, team captains and even those who collect rink fees ahead of each session."

Stamford IBC won a highly competitive match 147-92.

Stamford bowlers have been performing with distinction in the Area rounds of national competitions with some already within sight of reaching the knock out stages of inter Area finals.

No less than 10 of the club's members were playing simultaneously at Boston last Thursday, two in the pairs and two more rinks in the Senior Fours. Unfortunately only one team got through.

While John Holroyd and Mick Humphreys lost to Dan Harrison and Adrian Field 9-32 and Keith Rippin's rink ( with Alan Romaine, Doug Want and Cliff Watson) went down 12-22 against Les Feary's quality quartet, there was more joy for Roger Martin's rink.

Against Richard White's four they were always behind and trailed 10-15 after 16 ends when Martin (playing with Bob Warters, Peter Edwards and Tony Scarr) fired out a Boston bowl for a 3-count and four shots over the next three ends was enough to see them into the next round to play Feary 18-16.

In the Over 60s singles Romaine plays clubmate Martyn Dolby after beating Tony Barwell 21-18. Barwell fought back from 6-16 but could not quite maintain his momentum. In the Senior Pairs Mike Ramsden and Peter Edwards are through after beating John Pearson 25-14.

There was also victory for Dave Hudson, Holroyd and Ray Keating over Trevor Bannister (Sleaford) in the Over 50 Triples, they now play clubmate Roger Martin's trio.

In the mixed pairs, the hopes of Christine Ford and Keith Rippin of progressing came to an end at the hands of Grantham's Caroline Davis and Matthew Orrey.

Stamford bowlers were part of the Lincolnshire Over 50s team which lost 106-105 to Durham at New Earswick (York).

Dave Hudson, Doug Want, Bob Warters and Peter Edwards won on their rink 19-17 but it was not enough to stave off overall defeat.

Stamford's women scored a 12-shot victory over local rivals Sleaford in the Lincs Trudy Bates inter-club league, Ann Cullingworth's rink taking the individual honours with a 32-9 win.

However, in the Mason's Over 60 double rink competition, Stamford lost on both rinks to Boston.

THE BATTLE IS ON FOR THE SILVER SALVER

Friendly Captain Denis Stapleton reports: What a great performance our Weekend Friendly team put up against local rivals Spalding in the first of the two leg matches for the coveted silver plate. We shall going on to their patch for the second leg with an impressive 33 shot lead due mainly to our best rink of relative newcomers Janette and Jeff Bourne and their skip Mark Hebden who notched up a 29-6 win. Well done to all three of them and let's hope they will be available for the return match and come up with a similar result.

The next day we traveled to Melton with a mixture of some of the regular 'Friendly Weekenders' and some who were venturing into the friendly arena for the first time, and we nearly pulled it off losing by only 6 shots in spite of being twenty or thirty down for most of the match. Our recovery was mainly due to our best rink of Rose March, Bruce Acock and Alec March winning 28-6.
