Stamford win against Melton weighed down with pies

Wait for it, wait for it, we won, oh yes we did! Well done to our Weekend Friendly Fighting Unit who after losing the away match at Melton got their revenge at home by ignoring that dreaded second half slippery slope that they had become accustomed to with an impressive 133-110 win. This was mainly due to the pair of Henshaws, no not the lesser spotted, but Dennis and Stella from Ryhall who stood in at the last minute. Reason being Friendly captain Maggie, after agreeing with Melton captain after the away game that we would stick at eighteen players, for this the return match, had a phone call from one of Melton’s other Friendly captains saying that they were now bringing twenty four. Oh yes, here we go again. So anyway, our intrepid (look it up in the dictionary) captain mustered together the six required and we were ready to roll!

And off we went, twenty one ends or to the bell after three hours. We’ll show those pork pie munchers! And show them we did, twelve up after six ends and leading on four rinks. On the eleventh end and into that, what has always been dreaded, second half and we were still leading this time by thirteen, unlucky for some, not this time matey.

Back to the Henshaws , you might have thought so for Stella s rink which at this stage were losing by, but not a disastrous 11-14 after being eleven down after five ends. On the next rink Dennis the Menace, her better half, so he says, and he who taught her everything she knows, so he say s, was leading for the first time 8-6. Credit then for our 63-50 lead at this stage goes to the rinks of Arthur Lonslow up 15-5, Maurice (the Ukulele Man) Dye up 12-9, Helen (the Bear) Holroyd up 16-7. Our sixth rink headed up by Jill Goode was, after being our best rink for the last two matches, witnessing one of those days where nothing would go right, we all know about those. On to the next match Jill.

So back to the plot, Stella Henshaw rallied her rink to 23-23 with one end to play and lost by two. Not to be outdone the menace s rink stormed through with the help of a seven on the nineteenth to take the best rink prize with an impressive 29-9, just pipping Helen who finished up 27-10. Credit also to Arthur Lonslow s rink winning 24-14 and Maurice Dye s 22-16.

Rinks scores and names : Janet Lonslow, Maggie Holden, Margaret Andrews, Arthur Lonslow won 24-14; Janet Dye, Margaret Grainger, Ron Blake, Maurice Dye 22-16; Janet Benns, Val White, Bob Hulka, Stella Henshaw lost 23-25; Vanessa Shackleton, Cherry Burgess, Ian Hall, Dennis Henshaw won 29-9; Ann Preston-Bambridge, Colin Burgess, Nigel Trigg, Helen Holroyd won 27-10. Reg Goode, Serena Brunning, Howard Neath, Jill Goode lost 8-26.

Well done team, a great all round effort particularly as our chairman Keith Rippin had whispered in my ear as the first wood was bowled. They’ve brought some good players with them, so they’re not here to lose. We showed um!
