Men's 'A' suffer setback at Lincoln

Stamford Men's A team slipped up in their bid to take a stranglehold of the Lincolnshire First Division, beaten 98-83 at Lincoln and picking up just two of the 18 points available.

It leaves them 21 points behind Boston A - who grabbed 12 points against bottom club Spalding last week in a five shot victory. Stamford have a game in hand and still to play Boston away on March 21. Stamford also visit Spalding on March 14.

In a match played to a high standard, it might have been so different at Lincoln had Stamford been able to hang on to a slender lead with just a handful of ends to play..

However, Lincoln picked up 11 shots over all five rinks after last jacks were bowled - enough to swing the match and the points in their favour

Stamford emerged with only one winning rink - Mike Humphreys, Mick Linnell, captain Paul Bailey and skip Martyn Dolby - winning 24-12 after leading 23-6 at 17 ends and devastated to drop a four count at the end.

Elsewhere Jon Earl's rink led 18-14 at 17 ends before conceding seven in the last four, while Adam Warrington's quartet got within one but dropped a two on the 21st end. Trevor Collins rink trailed by four going into the last end but held enough to scramble a point from their match until opposition captain Richard Ashton drew a 'toucher' to emphatically put the result out of reach.

Finally, spare a thought for Roger Martin's rink who toiled with little success. They trailed 18-0 after just seven ends against George Draper but hung in gamely and eventually lost 28-10.

Result (Stamford names only):

Lincs League Division One: Lincoln 98 (16 pts) Stamford A 83 (2). M Humphreys, M Linnell, P Bailey, M Dolby won 24-12; W Aspinall, C Ballard, N Wright, A Warrington lost 19-22; Mal Smith, D Miller, P Buckley, J Earl lost 18-19; R Allam, O Aspinall, B Warters, T Collins lost 12-17; D Hudson, M Ramsden, J Travis-Jenner, R Martin lost 10-28.
