Stamford indoor bowlers were soundly beaten 16-0 by former national champions Spalding Lightning in the Top Club event. They lost points in all formats in men’s and women’s singles, as well as mixed, pairs, triples and fours, but put up stubborn resistance.
Said team captain Tom Newman-Borrett, beaten 21-20 in the singles by Graham Smith: “We had to make a few changes because some players were not happy in the positions and format for which they were originally selected. We always seem to come up against Spalding and to beat them one day is something to aim for.”

Stamford also lost their first round match in the Egham Trophy - a national event in which two mixed rinks compete simultaneously at home and away. They won the two home rinks against Boston but lost overall 75-56.
Away from home and against a strong Grantham team, Stamford B lost their second successive fixture in Division Two of the Lincs Indoor League 103-55, conceding all but two of the 14 points at stake.
Their only success came from the rink of Dave Hudson, John Pearson, Ron Blake and Jeff Pitt who beat Joe Lewis’s four 22-16 despite dropping seven shots on the 18th end.

Elsewhere, in the national men’s inter club competition for the Denny Cup, Grantham lost 73-84 against Sleaford and now play Stamford on Saturday (November 1) - two rinks playing simultaneously home and away from 10 am.
In the second division of the Lincs Mixed League, also on Saturday (2.10 pm) Stamford will be looking for a first win of the season - at home to local rivals Grantham, following defeat at Dunholme.
