Setback for 'Fantastic Fivers' bowlers

Hopes of Stamford Indoor Bowls Club qualifying for the knock out stages of the Fantastic Fives inter-club summer competition in their first season, suffered a setback when they were comprehensively beaten by Rugby Thornfield IBC.

Having picked up three out of the eight points available from the singles, pairs, triples and fours format in the earlier reverse fixture at Rugby, the Stamford players were confident of improving on that - but lost all four disciplines on their home surface.

In the singles Alan Romaine went down 11-14 in ten ends and in the fours, David Howarth, June Brennan, Peggy Birch and Wayne Aspinall lost 5-8 despite picking up three on the first end.

After a short break, Romaine and Birch lost 8-11 in the four-bowl pairs and the balance of the team in the triples lost 5-13, leaving Stamford out of the running for a qualifying place.
