Barwell makes his mark in Over 60s singles triumph

The hours Braceborough bowler Tony Barwell spends in solitary practice, paid off this week when he scored an outstanding win in the first round of English National Over 60s singles, toppling Spalding veteran John Needham 21-11. He now faces fellow Stamford IBC player Derek King, who accounted for team-mate Keith Rippin in a closely-fought battled 21-18.

Peter Banks triumphed over fellow clubman Alan Romaine 21-16 and awaits the tie between Bruce Acock and John Pearson. Ray Keating must travel to Boston to play Mick Tomlin who beat County President Richard White 21-12.

In the English men's singles, Jonathan West (Boston) beat Stamford's Richard Allam 21-12. Allam and King also went down 15-22 to Stephen Harris and Martyn Dolby in the pairs, while Ray Keating and John Holroyd lost 10-20 at Spalding (John Needham).

Stamford's Women's team face Boston on Saturday (10am) in the national inter-club Yetton Trophy, two rinks at home, two rinks away.

After their defeat of Lincoln A last week, Stamford's mixed team suffered a setback, losing on four rinks at Boston claiming only two of the 18 points available in a 25-shot defeat.

Moira Holroyd, Alan Barnes, Christine Ford and Keith Rippin edged home 23-17, while Margaret Andrews, Wally Kettle, Margaret Bloxham and Derek King dropped a five count on the last end to tumble 21-22.

Competing in the Trudy Bates Lincolnshire League, Stamford women met their match at Spalding, suffering defeat on all rinks in a 114-68 scoreline. Against former international Gloria Haney, Glenys Edwards' rink came closest to salvaging some points but lost by one shot.

In the Lincs Men's Over 60 League Division Two, Stamford continue to dominate the start of the season with another victory, this time a 133-76 over Dunholme, claiming all but two of the points available.

Stamford IBC was saddened by the death of John Stoneham from Market Deeping. He was a former club champion and also played regularly for the Northants Federation county teams.
