By securing maximum points against bottom of the table Louth, Stamford's mixed team are in a handy position for promotion back to the First Division following relegation last season.

Scunthorpe lead the table with 143 points after winning at Grantham, but Stamford are just 15 points behind with two games in hand and entertain Scunthorpe at home on Saturday (2.10pm).

And thanks to the 18 points Stamford collected with a 132-69 victory against Louth, they have a superior shots difference over both their rivals, which also includes Skegness who took 16 points from Dunholme..

Leading the way against Louth was the new combination of Richard Martin and skip John Little whom, paired with June Brennan and Margaret Andrews, won at a canter by 21 shots to take the rink honours in what turned out to be a one- sided match overall.

Other rinks also took on board the pre-match warning from captain Margaret Bloxham that the team cannot afford to take their foot off the pedal in their bid to regain Division One status.

Result (Stamford names only):

There was little seaside cheer to be had for Stamford's women bowlers from an early morning trip to Skegness in the county women's league -defeated 109-86 with just four points to show for their visit.

Only rinks skipped by Sue Moir and Chris Ford overcame the tricky surface on which the home side tend to dominate.
