If Stamford's men are to progress into the last 16 of the Denny Plate in three weeks time, for only the second time in their history, they must knock out local rivals Spalding - a team littered with internationals and no doubt keen to put their neighbours in their place.

Against Peterborough, Stamford were rarely troubled, thanks initially to the home rinks skipped by Martyn Dolby and Tristan Morton giving them a flying start of 21 shots inside just five ends and a 35-shot advantage after ten.

The away rinks, meanwhile - skipped by Roger Martin and Simon Law - took time to settle to the slower carpet before eventually joining the overall domination.

At Stamford the Dolby quartet of Dave Hudson, Mick Linnell and Peter Edwards ran out 25-11 winners against former club member Ray Keating while Morton's block settled for 26-15 with two late three-counts.

Twelve shots in three ends turned the tables at Peterborough for Law, whose rink trailed 3-11 at one stage and a six count on the last end for a 33-15 win, probably flattered them. As for Martin's rink a late nine shot flourish helped earn them a 19-13 victory.

Spalding beat Church Gresley 107-60.

STAMFORD PAIR THROUGH

A six count on the 11th end and a late surge of 11 shotsin the last four ends, saw Neil Wright and Adam Warrington safely through to the second round of the national pairs at Grantham (26-13) against Josh Meakins and M Eurich.

However, in the same competition, Paul Dalliday and Tristan Morton lost 24-7 at home to Stephen Harris and Graham Smith (Spalding) last year's semi-finalist. They trailed 7-8 before a run of two five-counts and a three, put paid to their hopes.

YETTON TROPHY RUN ENDS AGAINST BARWELL

Hopes that Stamford's women might embark on a Yetton Trophy campaign were dashed by Barwell, the Leicestershire club winning on three out of four rinks with a 74-53 aggregate.

They never really recovered from going ten shots down overall after ten ends and 19 behind with six ends to play and it was left to the home rink of skip Katie Bailey and Chris Ford's away rink to salvage some pride.

Unfortunately despite an heroic effort in which they led 14-8 with only a handful of ends to play, the Bailey rink conceded late shots and were unable to added to their tally. The Ford quartet, however held on to force a draw.

Results (Stamford names only):

Yetton Trophy. Stamford 53 Barwell 74. Home - C Gray, P Birch, S Moir, R March lost 14-20; J Want, P Jones, C Warters, K Bailey lost 14-19; away - J Brennan, MKing, S Suffling, C Ford drew 14-14; E Wallace, M Holroyd, HHolroyd, G Edwards lost 11-21.

YOUNG TRIO HEAD FOR POTTERS

Three of Stamford Indoor Bowls Club's young prospects are joining forces to represent the club at an under 17 triples event run by former world champion Greg Harlow at the Potters Resort.

The three young bowlers - Owen Aspinall (11) and brother and sister Olly (10) and Amia Jeapes (12) will take part on December 8.

Olly and Amia's father Michael is a former England Under 25 outdoor international who represented the White Rock outdoor club and Falaise indoor club in Hastings.

FOOTNOTE: Though Olly lost to experienced Under 25 international Jordan Philpott in the national under 25 singles in straight sets, he put up a stubborn performance (2-11, 8-9). However, yesterday (November 15) he beat talented Barwell bowler Ellie Hamblett 7-2, 7-5 in the Under 18 singles.
