Bragging Rights and 12 Point Win for A Team

Stamford's two men's teams, A and B, locked horns on Sunday. Maximum points would also elevate the 'A' team to the top of the Lincs League (South) albeit temporarily with other clubs' results yet to be submitted.

Winning on three of the four rink they had to settle for just 12 of the 14 points available, and won with a convincing 47-shot margin.

Credit must go to four of the A team - Mick Humphreys, Dusty Miller, Jon Earl and Adam Warrington - whom together with the B team's Tony Barwell, had already played 25 gruelling ends in a Federation Derbyshire Trophy match for Northants A in the morning and who made the dash from Huntingdon to represent their club in the afternoon.

Despite having to adjust to a slower surface, all five performed admirably with Earl's rink, boosted by the extra energy of Jay Travis-Jenner, racing into a 13-2 and then 25-3 lead before, as fatigue kicked in, they conceded eight shots in the last couple of ends.

But it was Warrington's rink - with Mike Ramsden, Mal Smith and Neil Wright playing their part inflicting heavy scoring again Maurice Dye's quartet - who took the rink honours.

Result: Lincs Men's League (South): Stamford B 62 (2pts) Stamford A 109 (12). Stamford B names first: Tony Barwell, Charlie Jones, Keith Gentry, Keith Rippin lost to Mick Humphreys, Dusty Miller, Jay Trevis-Jenner, Jon Earl 12-32; Henry Gordon, Neil Crees, Dave Heffernan, Maurice Dye lost to Mike Ramsden, Mal Smith, Neil Wright, Adam Warrington 9-38; Pete Linnell, Sam Downs, Ron Blake, Darren Middleton beat Chris Ballard, John Suffling, Owen Aspinall, Bob Warters 20-12; Mick Smith, David Edwards, Mick Owens, Ally McNaughton lost to Don Bruce, Mick Linnell, Alan Barnes, Roger Martin 21-28.

Paul Green, Ron Blake and Tony Diovisalvi will represent Stamford in the first round of the Lincs IBA triples after surviving a play-off in final qualifying. They were pegged back from 9-2 ahead to sharing 22 shots after the two-hour session against Chris Ballard, Bob Warters and Owen Aspinall but nicked the tie with one shot on the extra end.
