Stamford's women bowlers face a tough clash against Leicester IBC on Saturday (10am) in the next round of the Yetton Plate after a comprehensive 30-shot defeat of local rivals Peterborough in the English indoor inter-club championship.

Following their initial Yetton Trophy defeat by Spalding, one of the favourites, the Stamford players quickly established an early lead in this back-up competition for first round losers. The two Stamford home rinks took advantage of their familiar conditions, while the Stamford away players adapted better to the slicker City surface.

At halfway Stamford held a comfortable lead overall with all rinks in the lead and by the end of the 18-end match had established an 86-56 winning margin.

Results (Stamford names only):

Yetton Plate. Stamford 86 Peterborough 56. Home - B Sims, E Wallace, R March, P Birch won 23-10; J Robinson, C Barnes, F Rogers, M Bloxham won 27-16; Away - J Brennan, C Warters, S Suffling, C Ford won 23-11; M Andrews, M Holroyd, G Edwards, S Moir lost 13-19.

The women will field a similar side against Leicester on Saturday, while the Stamford men, in their Denny Plate against Melton will make a tactical change against a team they beat during their run to the quarter-final in this competition two years ago.

Martyn Dolby takes his rink to Melton alongside Paul Bailey, while leaving Roger Martin and Peter Edwards to hold the fort at Stamford (10 am, Saturday).

Stamford: Home - D Hudson, C Watson, D Want, P Edwards; J Holroyd, A Barnes, B Warters, R Martin. Away - R Allam, D Miller, A Warrington, P Bailey; S Harris, M Humphreys, J Earl, M Dolby.

The second division of the Lincs Over 60s league no longer looks so daunting for Stamford after a second successive win which takes them up to third place, leapfrogging over their latest victims Boston.

They took 16 of the 18 points available with a 98-80 victory, Dennis Henshaw's rink of Derek Veasey, Brian Tuplin and Charlie Jones taking the rink honours with a 23-14 win.

The match was interrupted at 11am with a period of silent reflection to commemorate Armistice Day and the loss of life of those who fought in the two World Wars.

Result (Stamford names only):

Lincs Over 60s Division Two. Stamford 98 Boston 80. T Barwell, G Corby, M Owens, J Geary lost 16-20; D Howarth, T Weaver, A March, Richard Martin won 19-13; D Veasey, B Tuplin, C Jones, D Henshaw won 23-14; W Kettle, T Freeman, R Harvey, K Vinter won 21-17; A Lonslow, Mal Smith, R Graham, A Horton won 19-16.

Stamford's mixed team suffered its first setback after gaining promotion to the first division of the Lincolnshire League, beaten by 22 shots at Spalding claiming only three of the 18 points available.

They never quite came to terms with a surface which bowled a yard or two slower than their own but full credit to Spalding who took the opportunity to press home their advantage.

Cliff Watson's rink conceded a shot on the last end to tie 19-apiece against Graham Wright to gain a point and with June Brennan and Carol Warters in good form, John Little and Bob Warters managed to snatch both vital points against Maurice Elding's quartet.

In the national Champion of Champions singles against Spalding's England international Graham Smith, Martyn Dolby had the chance to capture a major scalp.

Smith settled quickly on the first end with the mat up the green and it took a neat conversion for Dolby to rescue a single. From then on Smith drew relentlessly to pull out 7 - 1 and 9 - 2 leads which he stretched to 17 - 7. A series of singles gave Dolby signs of hope until at 19-10 Smith expertly trailed the jack for a match-winning full house.

Said Dolby: "No complaints, Graham was just too good for me on the day."

Earlier in the week, Dolby beat clubmate John Pearson 21-10 in the EIBA senior singles.

Malcolm Cullingworth and Derek King dominated Spalding's Maurice Elding and John Needham in the Over 60s pairs, winning 32-2 on their favourite rink 6.
