Stumped at Boston

Post date: Jan 26, 2017 6:51:59 PM

Our Weekend Friendly team of loyal and faithful troops dispatched themselves to Boston armed with AA Route Planners and satnavs in case they got caught up in the hurly-burly of the Saturday morning traffic and diversion signs in the home of the well known 'stump'. They certainly weren't stumped for enthusiasm after their first win of the season away to Sleaford , so watch out you Bostonian lot ! Oh dear, after six of the eighteen ends, we were playing triples, we were down 16-33 and were only winning on Garry Knights rink. But, all is not lost, after twelve ends we were leading by 68-65 due mainly to an eight, on the twelfth, by that wily old campaigner ( Oh no he isn't, oh yes he is) Dennis Henshaw's rink. So, six ends to go, hang in there, keep going, concentrate, and other well known phrases associated with our beloved game, some of them of course not printable.

On we soldiered until with one end to go the scoreboard read 93 to us 101 to them. Sadly we could only manage another three to their six, final result down by 97-107. So, as it would say on the old school report ' showing signs of improvement, keep up the good work'.

On that note we will have to be at our best in our next friendly when we have the second leg of the infamous Welland Salver to play on the fourth of February away against Spalding. We have retained the trophy for the last couple of years, but we are thirty shots down after the first leg. To quote, miracles do sometimes happen but the impossible make take a little longer. It may be an uphill task but rest assured we'll keep trying until the fat lady has stopped singing or when the bell tolls to call time.

Rink scores ( our names only) Rosemary Roberts, John Innes, Dennis Henshaw won 26-14; Janet Dye, Serena Brunning, Maurice Dye lost 13-22; Cherry Burgess, Margaret Grainger, Helen Holroyd won 20-13; Vanessa Shackleton, Janet Benns, Howard Neath lost 14-28; Jane Innes, Jean Dupree, Stella Henshaw lost 10-15; Tina Knights, Colin Burgess, Garry Knights lost 14-15.
