Open Day Set for January 8, 2022

Following the success of its recruitment drive in September, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club's Development committee plans a fresh open day on Saturday, January 8 (10am- 4 pm) when potential new bowlers are encouraged to give the sport a try.

As well as current members being encouraged to bring a friend, a leaflet drop, banners around the town and publicity are planned which will hopefully attract individuals, couples and families to take advantage of the club's world class facility off Exeter Gardens.

Says development committee chairman Ian Hall: "Indoor bowls on a full-size carpeted green is a great sport for all ages, whether socially or competitively and we are keen to share our facility with the community."

The open day is free and includes qualified coaching and use of equipment. All you have to do is bring a pair of flat-soled shoes or trainers. Bar and refreshments are available.

CLUB COMPETITIONS DRAW

Stamford IBA Club Competitions secretary John Holroyd is still looking for entries to complete the full draw for matches which will start in the New Year. Opportunities are still available in Ladies rinks (two more teams needed), men's rinks (1), ladies triples (1) and mixed rinks (2) to avoid teams devaluing the competitions by being drawn directly into finals.

The Novices Cup and Plate, a three-bowl triples competition for new bowlers, has now reached eight entries and will be drawn shortly. The club finals will be played on the weekend of April 10-11.

WOMEN TOP THE TABLE

After successive wins against Skegness and Grantham, Stamford women surged to the top of the Lincs (Trudy Bates) League southern section. The victory at Grantham included two winning rinks and a draw and gives them 28 points from four matches, six clear of Spalding and Boston who have games in hand.

The rink of Rosemary Roberts, Valerie Du'Kett, Margaret Broadbelt and Shirley Suffling paved the way for the overall honours thanks to a convincing 30-11 win, while Rose March's quartet won by nine and Carol Warters' rink pinch a shot on the last end to salvage a point.

Scores: Lincs Women's (Trudy Bates) League South: Grantham 62 (3pts) Stamford 87 (11): Stamford names only: A Lea, S Gentry, P Jones, C Warters drew 17-17; M King, E Wallace, S Henshaw, C Ford lost 20-23; R Roberts, V Du'Kett, M Broadbelt, S Suffling won 30-10; P Birch, J Lonslow, M Holroyd, R March won 20-11.

STILL PLACES AVAILABLE FOR CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

The Stamford IBC Christmas Tournament - offering £300 in prizes - is approaching the deadline for entries to be received but there is still room for more teams to take part in the event on Tuesday, December 28.

Teams in this fours competition will be split into two sections, each team playing four 7-end matches. Cost of entry is £20 per team with meals available if booked in advance. Entry forms available from opposite reception. Contact Carol and Bob Warters for more information (01780 721411). Closing date December 17.

Following the government's latest Plan B restrictions and guidance provided by the E.I.B.A., the game's governing body, the wearing of face coverings becomes mandatory for entry and moving around the club from Friday December 10.

The club directors and management committee have agreed that whilst bowlers have discretion on wearing face coverings on the green they may wish to protect themselves and others by doing so.

Face Coverings may be removed when siting to eat or drink.

Says the club's statement issued on Thursday (December 9): "The wearing of face coverings is now mandatory) when entering, leaving and moving around the building except if exempt.

"While face coverings may be removed to bowl you may wish not to do so in order to protect yourselves and others around you. In either case please respect others' personal space. Face coverings may be removed when seated to eat or drink."

Notices will be displayed around the club and receptionists are being requested to draw these to the attention of those entering the building.

Adds club chairman Keith Rippin: "These are difficult times but we need to promote safety while trying to ensure the club can continue to operate. The next few weeks may show which way things are going and what needs to be done to manage the situation.

"It is perhaps fortunate that we will shortly have a natural break over the festive season, when the club will be closed."
