Double triples success for Stamford combinations

The new combination of Jan Want, Sue Moir and Christine Ford have reached the Area semi-final of the EIBA Over 50s Ladies Triples with an outstanding last gasp away defeat of three established players from Spalding IBC.

But it took a drawn winner by Ford with the last bowl of an extra end for them to proceed to the next stage against Michelle Billings, Julie Hicks and Gloria Haney.

After six ends the Stamford girls were 2-6 down but had drawn level by the halfway stage of this 18-end contest only to go 7-9 behind.

Ford takes up the story: "On the 15th end Sue trailed the jack for us to go one up and then killed the 18th end with the score at 12-12 (and two down) to force extra time.

"We elected to give the jack away in the coin toss to allow us the last bowl and I managed to draw the shot with my last bowl for us to win by one. We were thrilled, especially having not played together before and on an away carpet."

In the men's equivalent discipline Bob Warters, Cliff Watson and Keith Rippin, reached the third round for the second successive season - this time with a 21-12 defeat of Joe Lewis and Grantham brothers Russell and Nick Orrey.

A six count on the second end set the tone, which they extended to 12-5 after seven ends, eventually forcing skip Nick Orrey into playing to some heavy bowls in which at times he was unlucky not to see go in his favour. Successive three counts on the 13th and 14th ends finally put the result out of reach.

The Stamford trio now host the winners of an all-Spalding tie between Graham Wright and Nick Wilkie for a place in the Area final.

FEDERATION COMPETITIONS LATEST

Defending Northants Bowling Federation men's indoor pairs champions Mick Humphreys and Roger Martin were knocked out at home in the first round by Whittlesey duo Graham Agger and Peter Brown, who quickly mastered rink one at Stamford to win 22-10.

Stephen Harris had to dig deep to come from 5-9 behind to beat Chris Ballard 21-14 in the 4-bowl singles. He now plays Nick Wilkie. James Harford continued his recent good form with a 21-5 defeat of Adam Warrington, last year's runner-up.

PAIR THROUGH TO COUNTY SEMIS

June Brennan and Christine Ford have become the first Stamford players to reach the 2019 Lincs county semi-finals in March after winning two rounds of qualifying at Grantham.

The pair had to survive an extra end against Lincoln's Pam Burke and Jo Hornston before facing Mary Johnston and Olive Wells from Horncastle.

It was a fantastic tussle and after Horncastle killed the penultimate end when inadvertently trailing the jack to their back bowls, the Stamford duo went on to win 16-12.

They will play at Sleaford on March 23.
