Stamford dish up a tasty showing in Denny Plate

Stamford IBC will play a local derby against rivals Peterborough on Saturday (November 16, 10 am) for a place in the last 32 of the Denny Plate, the competition for first round losers in the Denny Cup national inter-club championship.

They beat Grantham on all four rinks - two at home and two away - to set up a much-anticipated clash which is sure to be played in a tense atmosphere but will no doubt attract its fair share of light-hearted banter between both players and spectators.

Against Grantham, all Stamford rinks got off to a slow start but by the 15-end mark and with much encouraging support from the knowledgeable crowd at the Exeter Gardens stadium, they had established a comfortable 75-44 overall lead they never looked like relinquishing.

Ably supported by Richard Allam, Mick Humphreys and Tony Scarr, Roger Martin's rink were frugal in their concession of shots against Jay Lewis, who eventually threw in the towel at 6-27, with still two of the scheduled 21 ends to play.

Alongside, Wayne Aspinall, Chris Ballard, Paul Bailey and James Harford were just as commanding though they had to stave off a late rally from Adam Berridge to win 23-20

At Grantham, Martyn Dolby's four at one time held a ten shot lead - thanks to a run of 16 shots without reply - but added no shots in the last four ends and held on 18-16 against some aggressive saving shots from Nick Orrey.

For Paul Dalliday, Bob Warters, Trevor Collins and Simon Law, the other away rink, it was a match of two halves. Trailing 8-12 after eight ends they eventually strolled in 24-16 when Martin Pulling's rink conceded with only 19 ends completed and the match already out of reach.

Result (Stamford names only):

Denny Plate: Grantham 58 Stamford 92. Home - W Aspinall, C Ballard, P Bailey, J Harford won 23-20; R Allam, M Humphreys, T Scarr, R Martin won 27-6; away - D Hudson, M Linnell, P Edwards, M Dolby won 18-16; P Dalliday, B Warters, T Collins, S Law win 24-16.

STAMFORD B'S FIRST WIN
