In their first round Top Club clash at Nottingham, Stamford made a valiant effort in a competition demanding men's and women's singles and mixed pairs, triples and fours, before finally conceding.

Last year they reached the third round with defeats of Bedford and Kettering before losing at Kingsthorpe (Northampton) but the city team proved just strong enough in the triples to take the tie.p

Both Helen Holroyd and Paul Dalliday put up strong performances in the singles against John Mildren and Jayne Lee before both lost 17-21, then Katie Bailey and Martyn Dolby levelled the points score (4-4) by taking the pairs 18-15 against Sue Mart and Tom Doig.

Roger Martin - a late replacement for Tristan Morton - joined Elizabeth Wallace, Shirley Suffling and James Harford in the fours and they had their chances against a rink which included top players Duncan Robinson and Simon Skelton in a 13-15 defeat.

It left the triple of Adam Warrington, Christine Ford and Simon Law needing to win Against Pam Cutts, Phil Epton and Mark Lee by a margin to claim a place in the second round.

However, with one end remaining they were 9-17 behind so were forced to concede the match and the tie.
