More than 60 potential bowlers took the opportunity to try the sport the way it is played on a carpet instead of grass when Stamford Indoor Bowls Club opened its doors to new recruits.

The open weekend was the result of an intensive campaign to encourage more to take advantage of the club's world class facilities - a six-rink green, with viewing gallery, restaurant and bar.

"It was so rewarding to see so many people having a go at bowls," said a delighted club president Ian Hall, who chaired an internal development committee to drive recruitment. "Some immediately joined and signed up for the subsequent Saturday morning coaching sessions. We are hopeful more will follow.

"The Development team all worked hard to make it a success and we were all encouraged by so many positive comments about the excellent facilities so close to town and the friendly atmosphere," he added.
