AS PART of its 25th anniversary celebrations, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club inducted new presidents Bob and Carol Warters (pictured below left with outgoing presidents) into their roles - a quarter of a century after Bob's late mother Betty served as founder president.

Both his parents helped establish the club off Exeter Gardens in 1990 in somewhat controversial circumstances, local residents fighting against the building's construction by Kesteven District Council, before losing the long and expensive battle at the Court of Appeal in London.

Now, with its burgeoning membership of its six rink stadium settling at over 500 and run totally by volunteers, the club is recognised as one of the most progressive in the region with its players continuously making their mark in county and national events.Said Bob, a retired sports journalist: " We are proud to carry on our family's tradition in this special year and will do all we can to ensure the club continues to move forward and remains in the spotlight, while attracting newcomers to the sport and providing a haven for companionship."Outgoing presidents Dennis and Stella Henshaw reported that the club had enjoyed another outstanding season of competition both domestically, with its well supported leagues during summer and winter, and at county and national levels where it's players had won multiple Lincs IBA and Northants Federation titles.Among the outstanding players were Martyn Dolby who won four singles titles, including both the Lincs and Northants Senior trophies and Stephen Harris and Jan Want who reached the final of the EBF mixed triples. On the domestic front, teams captained by David Howarth (pictured left) won six leagues including The Wakes (Monday winter and summer), Outcasts (Wednesday), Typhoons (Thursday), Brunnians and Bourne Again (both Friday). Team-mates included: Alan and Christine Barnes, Harry Fidom, Russ Needle, Anthea Wade, Ann & Malcolm Cullingworth, Peter and Lorna Banks, Tony Barwell, Denis Winson, Peter Cox, Jean Dupree and Bob Tooley.Youngest winner was eight-year-old Stamford St Gilbert's School pupil Owen Aspinall who won the inaugural Under 12 singles, beating Annabelle Walker, great grand-daughter of one of the club's oldest members, 93 year-old Arthur Chapman, in the final.

In the men's Over 50 triples, a new partnership of Richard Allam, Derek King and Martyn Dolby traveled to Boston and came away with an excellent 27-16 victory over John Maury's trio.

Boston skip Mick Tomlin was also given a lesson in finishing by Dave Hudson, John Holroyd and Ray Keating. Trailing 11-13 the Stamford bowlers finished in style with a two and five count to run out 21-13 winners and earn a home draw with Adrian Field's Boston trio. Dolby must travel to Sleaford to play Trevor Bannister.

Malcolm and Ann Cullingworth, together with Langtoft team mates Peter and Angela Cox, won the Potters Holiday Resort tournament in Norfolk last week. Over 60 Stamford IBC members also took part in the tournament.
