Stamford bowlers shine in narrow seniors defeat

Two rinks of Stamford veteran bowlers represented Lincolnshire against Yorkshire in the Senior Liberty inter-county championship on Tuesday but despite winning both their matches on the new blue Lincoln carpet, the county lost overall by just two shots.

The match was played simultaneously at Lincoln and York with three rinks of four players at each venue and scores phoned through every five ends.

Stamford Skip Trevor Collins was outstanding as his rink won 18-13, with Dolby's trio edging home 22-20. The other rink at Lincoln, skipped by Mick Thompson, had the chance to win the match overall on the last end, needing four shots but could only grasp a single.

SENIORS WILL FACE CHARNWOOD

Having overcome March Town, Stamford A will take on Loughborough side, Charnwood IBC in the second round of the Over 60 Double rink, played at home & away simultaneously on an aggregate score basis at 12.30 pm on Tuesday (November 25).

Home - Dave Hudson, Mick Owens, Peter Edwards, Martyn Dolby; away - Bob Warters, Mick Linnell, Tony Scarr, Roger Martin.

DRAMATIC CLOSE TO TRUDY BATES CLASH

Never was the ability to keep your concentration during the last 30 minutes of a match illustrated more crucially than in Stamford women's Lincolnshire (Trudy Bates) A League fixture at home to Sleaford.

They got within a shot of their rivals after 18 of the scheduled 21 ends, only to run out of stamina and concede vital shots which cost them 14 of the 16 points available.

While the rinks of Christine Ford and Rose March scored comfortable wins, those of Sue Moir, Glenys Edwards and Denise Mackie weren't able to hold a rampant Sleaford who claimed 19 shots in the last five ends before time ran out and the bell brought the three-hour drama to dramatic close.

STAMFORD MEN'S B TEAM LOSE AT LOUTH

Despite losing the second of their three matches so far, Stamford B moved off the bottom of the Lincs Men's League division one by claiming four of the 18 points available at Louth.

They had chances to win the game but conceded late shots on crucial rinks and finally lost 87-101.

Rinks skipped by Alan Barnes and Cliff Watson both captured vital points though they both conceded seven and five shots respectively in the closing four ends.

It was a similar story for Derek King who dropped a late five and four count in a 21-16 defeat, while Trevor Christie held Simon Reeson until a late run of nine shots.
