Home green experience gave Northants A team the edge as they began their defence of the English Bowling Federation’s inter-county championship at Stamford Indoor Bowls Club against Northants B.
Simon Law packed his team with players with knowledge of their home surface and although the B side put up a brave fight to lead on four of the three two-bowl triples rinks at halfway, they were eventually overwhelmed 116-72, conceding 11 of the 14 points at stake, over 25 ends.

Rather than follow the men’s lead in reverting back to the promotion and relegation format installed during the Covid pandemic, the Lincs Women’s Indoor Bowling Association have retained the geographical north and south status, minimalising travel to and from matches.
And Stamford made a promising start by defeating old rivals Spalding 78-71 claiming 10 of the 14 points at stake. However, the return match on December 11 will demand a trip to Long Sutton where Spalding are playing their fixtures while their complex is currently being refurbished.

Failure to come to terms with the pace and line of Dunholme’s blue replacement carpet proved the undoing of Stamford’s mixed team where they lost on all five rinks in the Lincs second division.

With Spalding still unable to use the Long Sutton facility while their complex is being refurbished, the pair joined Danny Mills to win the home leg 28-8 while their away team drew.
Scunthorpe bowlers make their second appearance at Stamford on Wednesday (10.30 am) in less than a fortnight, this time against Stamford Seniors, losing finalists to Lincoln in last season’s Lincs League.
Stamford include debuts former Peterborough IBC recruit Fred Addy, who made more than 200 appearances for Northants outdoors, John Wallace, recently moved north from Wiltshire and Chris Richardson, making strides after returning from knee surgery.

Aiming to go one better as last year’s losing county finalists, Stamford’s Over 60s team chalked up 12-point haul at home to Scunthorpe in the first fixture of re-formatted Lincs League Division One.
They were always in control and finally ran out shots winners 80-61.
The rink skipped by captain Kevin Vinter and including Dave Hudson, Peter Burt and recent recruit John Wallace, took the individual rink honours 25-14 having been pegged back from a 14-2 lead.
Another newcomer to the team, Chris Richardson, helped John Holroyd’s rink to a 21-11 win alongside Pete Linnell and Dave Oakey.
The next match is at home to Louth on November 12.
