Holroyd wins through to County Sets Semi Finals

HOLROYD REACHES COUNTY SEMI-FINAL

Golf’s loss has been bowls’ gain recently with the form of John Holroyd earning a place in the semi-finals of the Lincs IBA county singles sets format at Sleaford on April 2.

A ‘frozen’ left shoulder has restricted the retired businessman’s golf aspirations of late but has enabled the right-handed bowler to concentrate on his form on a different kind of green.

His latest success came at Louth on Saturday when he followed 2-0 and 2-1 wins over Steve Derby (Lincoln) and Paul Roberts (Sleaford) by facing up to Spalding’s England Under 25 international Jordan Philpott (Spalding) in the quarter-final.

Holroyd won the first 7-end set and the Yorkshireman’s gritty determination saw him tie the second set with a brilliant last bowl to take shot and earn a place in the semi-finals against Philpott’s clubmate and fellow England international Dominic McVittie.

Also chasing a final spot at Spalding on April 22 will be Paul Oke (Sleaford) and Richard Ashton (Lincoln).

Elsewhere, Stamford’s Richard Allam beat Lincoln’s Dennis Skayman in straight sets before losing out to McVittie, while Chris Ballard and John Pearson were each beaten 2-0 by Roberts and Ruby Hill (Spalding).

June Brennan, Shirley Suffling and Chris Ford lost their Lincs Women’s indoor triples 12-19 at Sleaford against Rockhall, Tebbs and Hoyles from Boston.

Teenagers Owen Aspinall and Ollie Jeapes were members of the Lincs Under 18 triples double rink that lost 48-23 at Grantham, battling back from 38-2 deficit at one stage.

Christine Ford has reached the semi-final of the Lincs IBA mixed pairs semi-final for the second time. On this occasion she partners Kevin Vinter after they scored a 17-9 victory over Lincoln’s Nick Orrey and Jenna Earl. Eight shots in three ends proved crucial when leading 8-3.

At Sleaford on April 2 they will meet a Spalding duo - either Jean Patterson & Dominic McVittie or Karen Martin and Stephen Harris.

FOOTNOTE:

Tony Barwell is hoping his pairs partner Jeff Pitt will have recovered from a back injury to take part in the EIBA Over 60s Area final against Irvine Powdrill (Charnwood) on Thursday, March 2  (10 am).

Margaret King and Chris Ford play their EIBA Senior Pairs against Jan Elliott and her partner (Charnwood) at Melton on March 6.
