Shock win for Stamford quartet at Spalding

Four players who are regulars in Stamford's second string men's team caused a real upset in the Lincs IBA county rinks against a Spalding quartet of Liberty Trophy players, two of whom are England under 25 internationals.

Pete Linnell, Ron Blake, Ally McNaughton and Darren Middleton were up against Stephen Harris, Andy Dunham, Kevin Ekins and Jordan Philpott and took time to adjust to the pace of the Spalding carpet, trailing 0-8 but then led the match only to trail by two going into the last end.

Here, though, Linnell nailed the jack and Blake followed it, leaving Ekins and Jordan to recover with firing shots. However both failed, enabling the Stamford rink to win with three shots and reach the quarter finals against clubmates Martyn Dolby, Mick Linnell, Neil Wright and Adam Warrington.

The match guarantees Stamford representation in the county semi-finals at Spalding on March 28.

MIXED FIGHTING AGAINST RELEGATION

After a 160-mile round trip to Scunthorpe, Stamford's mixed team remain in the relegation zone of the first division of the Lincs county league.

The four points they picked up from the 18 available in a 107-75 shots defeat, keeps them just above Lincoln A on 29 points but still seven adrift of fourth-placed Horncastle.

Scunthorpe were comfortably beaten when they visited Stamford earlier in the season but on their own surface proved a tougher proposition.

However, credit to the rink of Mick Smith, Moira Holroyd, Sue Moir and Richard Allam who took the Stamford rink honours with an 18-11 win, scoring eight shots in the last four ends.

Team captain Christine Ford - with Jeff and Jeanette Bourne and Arthur Lonslow alongside - picked up five in four ends for a one shot victory.

Stamford have a game in hand on other teams and visit Lincoln on February 22.

Result (Stamford names only):

Lincs Mixed League Division One: Scunthorpe 107 (14 pts) Stamford 75 (4).

Ford and Brennan later joined forces in the Over 60 pairs to beat Liz Hext and Sheila Craig 17-13 at Peterborough, clinching an Area final place after Carol Hunter conceded. They are now one step from the Nottingham national finals.
