Leap of faith! Tethered to his parachute pilot, Alan emerges from the aircraft at more than 2 miles above the earth and is soon flying high (pictured below).

HAVING CELEBRATED our 80th birthday, most of us would settle for a quiet life in retirement. Not so Stamford bowler Alan Romaine who has taken on an 'action man' attitude, determined to still make a difference.

His latest venture to raise money for his favourite charity, Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, was to leap from 14,500 feet (approximately 2.5miles) on his second parachute jump over the Cambridgeshire countryside.

His last attempt cost him an injured ankle when landing heavily but he was determined to escape unscathed this time while raising a similar £1,000 for the charity.

Ahead of a tandem leap - strapped to experienced sky diver Radek Wlazlo - he had to endure several disappointing postponements until the weather cleared. But finally made his jump and emerged still smiling.

Said Alan: "The staff at Sibson Aerodrome were wonderful and handled what was a difficult few days weather wise with good humour and excellent organisation, keeping the nervous jumpers fully informed throughout.

"My 'pilot' Radek was a wonderful guy whom, when I asked him where he was from, he replied with a wry smile 'Peterborough'. He was indeed Eastern European but with a great sense of humour," Alan recalls.

Since his latest jump, Alan reveals several others in the club are tempted to give it a go for charity. Watch this space! BW

Phew... that's a relief! Safely down with the children's hospital gaining the benefit.
