Silence Acknowledged in Derby Clash

Players observed a period of silence in recognition of Remembrance Day ahead Stamford Men’s A and B sides meeting in the derby fixture in the Lincs League (South) on Saturday.

It was a poignant moment acknowledging not only those who had died in defence of their country in two World Wars but also those who had given military service some of whom were founder members of the club in 1990.

It also coincided with the birthday of B team captain Pete Linnell but he was unable to enjoy a double celebration as his A team rivals quickly took control of the match and eventually claimed all 14 points in a 130-36 victory.

The rink of Steve Christie, George Clarke, Dean Wilkinson and Dennis Henshaw provided the most stubborn resistance and trailed by only six at 15 ends. But they eventually lost 14-26 to the Wayne Morris and Kevin Vinter rink which included late replacements Brian Tuplin and Charlie Jones.

Stamford A’s next match in the Lincs league is the visit of Grantham on November 25, while the B team travel to Spalding.

And Coming Up is:

SPONSOR CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

Empingham-based Durant Cricket has stepped in to sponsor Stamford Indoor Bowls Club’s Open Christmas Fours Tournament on Thursday, December 28.

The company, which supplies and installs equipment nationwide,  recently installed the club’s new state-of-the art electronic scoreboard, which has received excellent compliments from its membership.

Its injection of £250 prizemoney for the fun tournament is a gesture of its support for the event, which aims to attract 24 teams each playing four sessions of seven ends.

Closing date is December 15, when a draw will be made but already entries are building up, so don’t delay. Forms are available from reception with each player in a rink of four paying £5. Two points are awarded for a win and one for each end won.

The popular event has, regularly attract players of all abilities and the club hopes many of its members will form teams, including players from other indoor clubs, to compete during a period when most facilities are closed until the New Year.

Meals will be available on the day but must be ordered and paid for in advance from Woodys Cafe at the club.

MEAGRE RETURN FOR OVER 60s

While the club’s hospitality is first class, Grantham Indoor bowls club’s generosity when competition success is at stake is positively miserly.

They proved it twice in as many days when Stamford senior bowlers visited, inflicting a 35-shot win over Stamford ‘B’ in the national double rink, then taking all but two of the 14 points available when the clubs clashed in the Lincs Over 60s League.

Despite starting well and taking an overall 15-shot lead in the early stages, only the Stamford quartet of Pete Linnell, Steve Miner, Martin Hewitt and Kevin Vinter came to terms with the carpet pace and maintained their momentum to win by nine shots.
