Cake:
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup shortening
1 stick butter
4 TBSP cocoa
1 cup water
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
dash of salt (omit if using salted butter)
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk (or you can sour milk by adding a splash of vinegar to the milk a few minutes before mixing into batter)
Sift in large bowl the sugar and flour, set aside.
In a sauce pan, bring to a boil the shortening, butter, cocoa, and water. Pour over sugar and flour mix.
Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, salt and vanilla. Mix well. Pour batter into large greased cookie sheet with high edges.
Bake for 15-17 minutes at 400 degrees.
Frosting:
1 stick butter
4 TBSP cocoa
6 TBSP water
1/2 bag confectioners sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup nuts* (optional)
dash of salt* (omit if using salted butter)
Bring butter, cocoa, and water to a boil in a sauce pan. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, (nuts*, salt*). Mix until all lumps of sugar are gone. Pour and spread over hot cake.
