The special leave petition filed by YSR Congress party president and Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the CBI inquiry into his alleged ill-gotten assets was to come up for hearing on Wednesday, but somehow it did not happen.
According to sources, the powers-that-be at the Centre managed the officials in Supreme Court to ensure that Jagan’s petition does not come up for hearing. Obviously, it is to ensure that the CBI files the FIR against Jagan and his business associates in the Nampally court.
If the Supreme Court grants a stay on CBI inquiry against Jagan, then the whole exercise will come to a naught. The CBI, then, would have to file a counter affidavit asking the SC to vacate stay for which it has to show valid grounds.
But once the CBI files the FIR, the chances of Supreme Court granting a stay are bleak, because the CBI will argue that the investigation has already begun and if Jagan gets a stay, there is every possibility of him tampering with the evidence. That is why, the Centre ensured that Jagan’s petition did not come up for hearing, while the CBI filed the FIR and got the search warrant from the court.
Interestingly, the CBI authorities maintained top secrecy about filing the FIR and did not inform the media at all.
A formal media communiqué is expected to be released only Thursday.
According to sources, the CBI authorities had identified as many as 91 locations belonging to Jagan, his family members and business associates for conducting searches. “The raids might begin anytime from now,” a source said.
