Bởi vì tôi khao khát Tự do (*)

ở nơi đó giam giữ Tự do,

bởi vì tôi khao khát Tự do.

Freiheit

Dezember 2012 gewidmet.

Wenn man mich ins Gefängnis steckt,

dann soll es ein kommunistisches sein.

Wo jemand wie ich Freunde entdeckt

und merkt: Wir stimmen überein.

Dort, wo man ins Gefängnis mich sperrt,

sollte es ein kommunistisches geben.

Dort, wo Freiheit ins Dunkel gezerrt,

und Herzen sind, hungrig nach Leben.

Wenn einst ich ins Gefängnis muss,

in ein kommunistisches soll man mich stecken.

Wo Poesie unter Verschluss

und schlafwandelnder Seelen Kuss

die Schlummernden versucht zu wecken.

Dichter in die Nacht der Zelle zwingen

heißt tausend Freiheitssterne leuchten lassen.

Freiheit in die Dunkelheit verbringen

lässt tausendfach den Mut zur Freiheit fassen.

Ist man einst mit Fesseln zur Stelle,

gewiss: für eine kommunistische Zelle.

Denn ich sehne mich nach Freiheit.

Nguyen Dac-Kien.

Because I thirst for Freedom

(For the demonstrators on December 9, 2012)

should tomorrow i have to go to jail

i would want it to be a communist jail

for there i will meet with honest, straight people

there i will find my compatriots living.

should tomorrow i have to go to jail

i would want it to be a communist jail

where Freedom is incarcerated

and so are those thirsting for Life.

should tomorrow i have to go to jail

i would want it to be a communist jail

where poets are incarcerated

and those dreaming wildly to shake up unconscious consciences.

don’t they know that to imprison poets in dark dungeons

is to free thousands of Free Spirits,

that to put Freedom in black dark cells

is to throw wide open the poetry of Man?

should tomorrow i have to go to prison

make it sure that it’s a communist jail

because I thirst for Freedom.

Because I crave for Freedom

if I were to be put in jail,

In a Communist jaill should I dwell

Together and righteous shall we meet

Of my kind shall live my people.

If I were to be put in jail

In a communist jaill should I dwell

where Freedom is off limit

yet passionate hearts beseech for more Life

If I were to be put in jail

In a Communist jaill should I dwell

where poets are constantly kept

with homeless souls to awake those unawakened.

to hold up poets in dark cells,

is to liberate the Freedom bequested from heaven

to hold up Freedom in dark cells,

is to free up poetic inspirations.

if I were to be put in jail

Certainly no other than a Communist jail,

For Freedom I always crave

Translated by Tran Vinh

Because I hunger for Freedom

(For the demonstrators of December 9, 2012)

if I am to be put in jail,

I want to be in a Communist jail cell,

where I ‘d meet righteous people,

where live the people of my own kind.

if I am to be put in jail one day,

I want to be in a Communist jail cell,

where Freedom is captured,

where hearts that hunger for Life exist

if I am to be put in jail one day,

I want to be in a Communist jail cell,

where poets are detained,

and sleepy wandering souls are jailed

to wake up the people who are clueless.

to put poets in dark jail cells,

is to liberate thousands of Freedom stars

to put Freedom in a dark jail cell,

is to liberate thousands of Human poetic inspirations.

if I am to be put in jail one day,

it must certainly be a Communist jail cell,

because I hunger for Freedom.
