Minister demands harsher penalties for illegal migration after disappearances
31.12.2018 (Taipei Times) - Stricter penalties for immigration offenses are to prevent incidents such as the sudden disappearance of 148 Vietnamese tourists earlier this month, the Cabinet said on Saturday.
At an interministerial meeting, Minister Without Portfolio Chang Ching-sen (張景森) issued a directive to review the Kuan Hung Pilot Project, which aims to attract visitors from several Southeast Asian nations, including Vietnam, the Cabinet said in a statement. [read more]
Taiwan: 152 Vietnam tourists 'disappear' during holiday
26.12.2018 (BBC) - The Taiwanese authorities are searching for 152 Vietnamese people who arrived on tourist visas last week and have since gone missing.
The tourists arrived in the southern city of Kaohsiung on 21 and 23 December, but all but one appear to have absconded, officials say.

Bacterial resistance to last-resort antibiotic is spreading at alarming rate in Vietnam
21.12.2018 By Sally Robertson, B.Sc. (News-Medical) - Researchers at Osaka University have discovered that polymyxin E-resistant Escherichia coli is widely prevalent among people living in rural Vietnam.
Polymyxin E is an antibiotic that is used to prevent the growth of Gram-negative bacteria such as E.coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is one of only a few remaining drugs that can treat multidrug-resistant bacteria and is categorized as a last-resort antibiotic by the World Health Organisation. [read more]
Dao women in Vietnam preserve traditional embroidery
20.12.2018 (Asia Times) - Intellectuals urge authorities to help ethnic groups preserve their culture and at the same time boost tourism.
An increase in imports into the local Vietnamese market is threatening traditional embroidery, which ethnic Dao women are desperately trying to preserve.
Lo Ta May, 29, from Lao Cai province, first started doing embroidery when her mother handed the tradition down to her, the Borneo Bulletin reported. Embroidery is very prominent in Ta Phin, the village where May is from, which is home to about 3,000 people from the Mong and Red Dao ethnic groups. [read more]

10.12.2018 (SBS) - Thousands of vulnerable women and girls from northern Myanmar are being trafficked to China and forced to marry, a study said Friday, offering a rare look at an issue that grips the conflict-hit borderlands.
China has around 33 million fewer women than men due to the decades-long one-child policy.

Spanish police arrest people smugglers from Vietnam
06.12.2018 (Washington Times) - MADRID (AP) - The European police agency says Spanish authorities have arrested 37 people suspected of belonging to a Vietnamese people-smuggling ring that has earned an estimated 13 million euros ($14.8 million).
Europol said in a statement Thursday the gang charged each Vietnamese migrant 18,000 euros ($20,500) and smuggled them into the European Union via South America. [read more]

Vo Van Co, a 49-year-old farmer at Vuon Man Ba Ho orchard in the Mekong Delta province of Can Tho, feels the environment has changed, as rain and water levels have fluctuated in recent years and affected his work - but he doesn't know why.
Local ecologist Nguyen Huu Thien said the delta now faces three major threats: climate change, "errors" in domestic development and projects upstream on the Mekong River.

It may mean that you’re not “mainstream” — or that you consider yourself “edgy” or unclassifiable. It may mean, simply, that you’re not successful. In a country such as Vietnam, the term “independent artist” has grave significance. “I am independent from the government and independent from a party,” says Mai Khoi. “I am my own person. I am independent from all organizations and companies. I’m just an artist, working for herself.”
Now in her mid 30s, Mai Khoi was born about ten years after the Vietnam War. She says that people of her generation don’t think much about the war. “What we think is, We have to do something to make a change. We don’t want to live under this system anymore.” [read more]

Monique Truong writes about the performance by this Vietnamese songwriter and popstar who has been banned from performing in her own country due to her political activities.
I knew less about Mai Khoi, primarily that in 2010 she won the Vietnamese Song and Album of the Year Award but now has been banned from performing in her country because of her political activities. Also, she was often called “the Lady Gaga of Vietnam.”
I always disliked that kind of relational understanding and comparison. It was imperfect and lazy. I wanted to experience a Mai Khoi who is the Mai Khoi of Vietnam. Given her opening words to us, I could tell that she was more than capable of defining herself. [read more]

Am 3. Dezember 1978 kamen die ersten der 1000 Boat People aus Vietnam in Friedland an. Zwei Veranstaltungen hat das Museum Friedland zu diesen Jahrestag geplant.
„Boat People und Cap Anamur – Erinnerungen der zweiten Generation“ heißt der Titel eines Gesprächs- und Filmabends mit den Filmemachern Marcel Neudeck, dem Sohn des verstorbenen Mitbegründers der Rettungsorganisation Cap Anamur Rupert Neudeck, und Dieu Hao Do, Vertreter der zweiten Generation der Boat People in Deutschland.

28.10.2018 Desiree Anstey (The Guardian) - CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Thien Tang was 14 when he joined the millions of refugees escaping war-torn Communist Vietnam between 1979 and 1980 by means of an overcrowded boat.
He knew before leaving home of the dangers the voyage would entail but not their extent.
“To write about events that happened some 30 years ago required digging into the darkest corners of my mind to haul out the bits and pieces of sorrowful memories, while carefully handling them like hand grenades,” he said.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) compiled statistics on piracy the Vietnamese boats encountered in 1981 and found 578 women had been raped; 228 women had been abducted and 881 people were dead or missing. [read more]

Hanoi urges its citizens to stop eating dog meat

Caritas auprès des familles migrantes de Saïgon
01.09.2018 (Eglises d'Asie) - Les catholiques de l’archidiocèse de Saïgon sont engagés, depuis des années, dans les lieux de mission de la banlieue de la ville, dont la population continue de croître pour atteindre aujourd’hui près de 14 millions d’habitants. Parmi eux, près de 300 000 catholiques du nord du pays sont venus chercher du travail. Ainsi, plus de mille fidèles du diocèse de Phat Diem sont arrivés entre janvier et mai pour travailler ou étudier. German police seize wedding rings in people-smuggling raids
15.05.2018 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - BERLIN - Police raided 20 flats in Berlin and Brandenburg on Tuesday and arrested three men suspected of being members of a gang smuggling Vietnamese people into Germany, officers said.
The men - two aged 57 and 35 from Vietnam and one 26-year-old German - were suspected of arranging fake marriages and counterfeit paternity certificates to help people get residency permits in Germany, police said. [read more]
Scheinehen: Razzia gegen Menschenschleuser
15.05.2018 (ZDF) - Die deutsch-vietnamesische Bande soll Scheinehen arrangiert haben: In Berlin und Brandenburg ist die Polizei mit einer Großrazzia gegen mutmaßliche Menschenschleuser vorgegangen.
Die Behörde sprach auf Twitter von einem "Schlag gegen Schleuser". Rund 200 Polizisten waren am Morgen im Einsatz, rund 20 Wohnungen wurden durchsucht.

Zur Einweihung kamen rund 600 Festgäste, darunter Bundestagspräsident Wolfgang Schäuble, Neudecks Witwe Christel und viele ehemalige Boat-People.

12.05.2018 (WDR) - In Troisdorf bei Bonn ist am Samstag (12.05.2018) ein Denkmal für Cap-Anamur-Gründer Rupert Neudeck präsentiert worden. Der Gedenkstein ist durch Spenden von den sogenannten "Boatpeople" finanziert worden. Neudeck hatte mit seiner Hilfsorganisation mehr als 11.000 vietnamesische Flüchtlinge aus dem chinesischen Meer gerettet.

At 13, most children are starting high school, but not So. Already independent, she packed her bags and left her small mountain village to work in Sapa town, a thriving tourist hub in north Vietnam.

20.04.2018 (Archaeology Magazine) - HANOI, VIETNAM—Vietnam Net reports that recent excavations in Hanoi’s Imperial Citadel of Thang Long have uncovered traces of large buildings dating from about A.D. 1000 to 1400 in an area to the east of the Kinh Thien Palace. The researchers uncovered the stone bases of columns and foundations, building and perimeter walls, courtyards, and drainage structures. Instead, you'll find a group of Vietnamese Buddhist monks and nuns in the kitchen. The restaurant, located in the Mall of Fortune shopping center in Garden Grove's Little Saigon, opened Jan. 28. It occupies the former space of Brodard Restaurant, famous for serving 10,000 grilled pork spring rolls daily to packed crowds. And Lotus was created by Brodard's owner, Diane Dang, 72, who donated the restaurant and its fixtures to the Vietnamese United Buddhist Foundation when Brodard moved to a larger location last December. 24.02.2018 (CNA) - Taipei - A National Immigration Agency (NIA) specialized operation brigade in Taipei busted a prostitution ring on Thursday and arrested 10 Vietnamese women and three Taiwanese johns, the agency said Saturday.
Chiu Yao-yung (邱耀雍), deputy head of the Taipei brigade, said the NIA received a tip in January that several Vietnamese migrant workers who were unaccounted for were working as prostitutes in the Greater Taipei area. [read more]
