Facebook removes accounts targeting critics of Vietnam’s government - Hanoi falsely claims affected users were ‘anti-state’ actors
03.12.2021 (RFA) - Facebook’s parent company removed a network of accounts on the platform that coordinated attacks against Vietnamese activists who criticized the government, but Hanoi said the removed accounts belonged to “anti-state” elements.
In its Adversarial Threat Report published Wednesday, Meta said users of the accounts abused Facebook policy by “mass reporting,” which is an organized effort to flag content with the intent of getting its author’s account suspended. China erhebt Territorialansprüche über einen Grossteil des Südchinesischen Meeres, durch das wichtige Schifffahrtsstrassen gehen und wo viele Rohstoffe zu finden sind. U.S. Calls for Release of Journalists Sentenced in Vietnam
18.11.2021 (VOA) - A Vietnamese court convicted five journalists affiliated with the Clean Journalism, group and sentenced them to multi-year prison terms for “abusing democratic freedoms.”
Vietnam’s constitution provides for freedom of expression, including for the press. But as the U.S. State Department’s most recent human rights report on Vietnam noted, “In practice, the government did not respect these rights.”
In its latest prison census, the Committee to Protect Journalists found that as of December 1, 2020, Vietnam held at least 15 journalists behind bars for their work, making it the second-worst jailer of journalists in Asia. [read more]

07.11.2021 Emilio de Miguel Calabia (ABC Blogs) - La idea que predomina es que la República de Vietnam del Sur fue un Estado corrupto, incompetente y turbulento, que estaba condenado a ser conquistado por Vietnam del Norte casi desde el minuto cero. Tal vez por eso, la atención que se ha prestado a la República de Vietnam del Sur ha sido escasa y a lo sumo se la ha presentado como una compañera de viaje renuente de EEUU durante el conflicto vietnamita. Con la idea de colmar el vacío historiográfico existente, la Universidad de California organizó en octubre de 2016 un simposio sobre la República de Vietnam del Sur, al que invitó a quince survietnamitas que ocuparon distintas posiciones en la Administración, el periodismo, las Fuerzas Armadas, la Policía y las artes. Mr To Lam, minister of public security - whose agency deals with the monitoring of dissent and surveillance of activists in the country - was seen tucking into the hunk of meat at Nusr-Et Steakhouse in the wealthy area of Knightsbridge.

Groß war der Andrang, als am Mittwoch (27.08.2021) eine Biografie über den chinesischen Staatschef an der Universität Duisburg vorgestellt wurde. Es war eine kurzfristig organisierte Ersatzveranstaltung: Denn eigentlich sollte die Buchpräsentation der beiden deutschen Journalisten Stefan Aust und Adrian Geiges, die im Juli diesen Jahres die Biografie "Xi Jinping - der mächtigste Mann der Welt" veröffentlicht hatten, in den Konfuzius-Instituten in Hannover und Duisburg als Online-Veranstaltung stattfinden - doch sie wurde kurzfristig abgesagt. "Es gab Einflussnahmen", sagte Ulrich Radtke, Rektor der Universität Duisburg-Essen, zu Beginn der Veranstaltung. Wie es dazu gekommen sei, werde noch geprüft. The quoted number in the media is between 12 and 24, noting that it will depend on the budget of the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense.

Vietnam introduces national social media guidelines
19.06.2021 (DW) - New social guidelines encourage users to post positively about the country. However, given the country's track record on dissent, the guidelines also serve to tighten the government's control.
Besides requiring individuals to be themselves on platforms and avoiding fake news, the new code also requires social media organizations to "deal with users in accordance with Vietnamese law" if they're requested by authorities to remove content from their platforms.
In December 2020, Amnesty International had accused the social media giants of "far-reaching complicity" by censoring content deemed critical of the government. [read more]

02.04.2021 Mai Ngoc Chau & Nguyen Dieu Tu Uyen (Bloomberg News) - Vietnam is seeking assistance from the U.S., Japan, European Union and United Nations organizations to help it obtain Covid-19 vaccines, according to a post on the Ministry of Health’s website.
Vietnam needs 150 million doses of vaccines this year, it said. Vietnam has inoculated more than 51,000 people as of April 1, the health ministry said on its website.
Vietnam has a deal with AstraZeneca Plc. to supply 30 million doses. The country expected to get by the second quarter about 4.9 million doses through the World Health Organization-backed Covax program and about 30 million doses between July and September. [read more]

A court in Hanoi has rejected the appeals of two brothers sentenced to death for their part in a bloody confrontation with police over land rights.

09.02.2020 (Liberal Publishing House) - This is a report on the violent government attack against Dong Tam village (near Hanoi, Vietnam) on January 9, 2020, just before the Lunar New Year. The attack resulted in the village leader’s death and more than two dozen arrests. Three policemen were also reported killed in the clash. This report reaches the conclusion that this event is the largest peacetime land dispute in Vietnam in terms of troops deployed, as well as one of the deadliest; it also highlights concerns about police brutality, abuse of power, and the contradictory concept of the “people’s ownership of land” in Vietnam.

Vietnam war für die über Europa und die USA weit hinausreichende „68er“ Bewegung Chiffre, Projektionsfläche und Katalysator: Es stand für den Glauben daran, dass die Unterdrückten dieser Welt ungerechte Herrschaft beseitigen, deren Verteidiger besiegen können und dafür, dass eine bessere, gerechtere und friedvollere Welt hier wie dort möglich ist. Vietnam war und blieb weit über 1968 hinaus ein politischer Mythos.

Amnesty International - DEATH SENTENCES AND EXECUTIONS 2014 ... Figures on the use of the death penalty continued to be classified as a state secret in Viet Nam, where media reported at least three executions. The real figure is believed to be much higher. Amnesty International recorded that the courts imposed at least 72 new death sentences, 80% of which were for drug trafficking, and that at least 700 people remained under sentence of death at the end of the year... its monopoly on state power, it faced growing public discontent with the lack of basic freedoms. While fewer bloggers and activists were arrested than in
2013, the security forces increased various forms of harassment and intimidation of critics.
Vietnamese courts lack independence and continue to be used as political tools of the CPV against critics.
Vietnam bans all independent political parties, labor unions, and human rights organizations. Authorities require official approval for public gatherings and refuse
to grant permission for meetings, marches, or protests they deem politically or otherwise unacceptable. ...
